Bit confusing
I have read a lot of these books and enjoy them but this one for me was a bit too confusing. I found the characters and particularly the places vague. At times I wondered where they were in relation to where they had been or were going. The positions of the ships guns land or sea confused me. Sorry to labour the point . I still enjoyed the book was left wishing it had Been more "joined up".

Second to none... except maybe second to none
I jave greatly enjoyed this series for so many years and this one is a favourite. I empathise so much with the struggles of the individual whilst being immersed in the historical world. I bought and lent and rebought this book several times- that should be praise enough.

Brilliantly written series
Typical Alexander Kent " Bolitho " novel every book in the series has kept me enthralled. I struggle to put them down until the end.

A strange tale in many ways, seems to put a damper into the overall stories, that haunts in the background of later tales.
