Pixies (DVD)

I am convinced of their importance
I initially saw this played on the now defunct TRIO satellite channel. At the time, I owned a once played copy of Doolittle. After hearing all of the commentary on the importance of the Pixies to modern music, seeing the powerful (yet physically still) nature of their live performance, and seeing some of the music videos for the first time, I was convinced that Doolittle was worth a genuine try.Yes, the Brits in "Gouge" do some kissing-up, but you can tell (they're not actors, after all), that it is truly sincere. Bowie and Bono, while neither one is half the artist of B.F., do seem especially informed and heart-felt in their analysis and praise. How humbling it must be to have so many renowned artists and journalists praise your work ! This is a good primer for further study of the band - it was for me.I'm in a cover band (as David Bowie says in the DVD - everyone who's heard Pixies, forms a band), since I feel a strong urge to try to cover Pixies' music. The other members didn't know of their work, so I am going to use this DVD as a seminar on the Pixies' work. I watch it regularly, for personal inspiration - I can't get enough. Thom Yorke (of Radiohead) says that you must be "that good for a start" - we are going to give it a shot.I was in high school when the more favored 3 CDs were published, but alas, was never exposed. A year and a half later, I am so glad that I saw, and now own this DVD - most importantly I "discovered" the greatness of Pixies. I even went to see them at a small local venue in June 2005 (got Kim's autograph!). I will be buying the "Sellout" DVD, when released in Oct2005. I feel that this is a very satisfying DVD, and a DEAL ( no pun intended) for the price of < $20 - a quarter what I paid for my wife and I to see them live.By the way, to the author of one of these commentaries - the name of the album is SURFER Rosa, not SISTER Rosa - you seem like you know what you're talking about, bone machine head! LONG LIVE THE PIXIES ! ! !

Behind the Scenes + Videos + Live
The Pixies were and still are one of the greatest Rock bands of all time. They mixed a raw youthful punk sound, with latin flair, and some of the most derangued and beautiful lyrics ever written. They weren't a popular band during their time, but have since influenced everyone from Nirvana to Radiohead. The DVD is actually more than I expected. I thought we'd get a standard set of videos with a bunch of old interviews and maybe a tiny bit of live stuff. Couldn't be more wrong. The live show is priceless, and worth the cost of the DVD alone. It's an early show (Frank looks so young), and captures music ranging from "Pilgrim" all the way up to "Surfer Rosa". Raw, beautiful, rock your socks off stuff here. Just makes you want more. The video section is pretty standard stuff, a collection of videos from back in the day. Nothing too special, but nice to have and see after all these years. The documentary "On The Road" is a decent look back at backstage antics, roadtrips through Europe, etc, mixed with various clips of live footage. Decent, but nothing too spectacular. The documentary "Gouge" on the other hand, is wonderful. Newer interviews with the band, and praising words from people such as David Bowie, Tom York, and Bono. This goes through all the Pixies releases, and puts everything into a nice perspective. The only omission from this is Kim Deal. She's nowhere to be found, and that's saddening. "Bass Goddess" she is called in this section, too bad she couldn't be included.Overall this is a must for any Pixies hardcore fan, and also provides a nice glimpse into the band for any Newbie.

One of the greatest concerts recorded - EVER!!!
For Pixies fans, this is a must. The concert footage from a 1988 UK show has to be one of the greatest concerts recorded. It shows how dedicated Charles, Joey, David and Kim are to their music. Kim looks hypnotized most of the time. David's drumming is close to perfect. Joey looks like he's afraid of the crowd. Charles is typical Black Frances; Mad at the world and laughing at it.The documentary, Gouge, is great. Not only does it provide you with details about the band, it demonstrates how influential the Pixies are to modern rock. The tour footage is okay. There's good spots, but they're in the middle of some very boring scenes.Last, the Videos. Pixies are not known for "show", and these videos show that. None of them are really worth watching, to be quite honest, but Veloria provides you with a few panty shots of Kim, which isn't too bad (though this is probably one of the worst videos ever).

Great DVD - Delayed delivery
I could not love this DVD any more than if it were somehow a blood relative. However, my order came almost a week after the last predicted date of delivery and it skips quite badly in my DVD player. Maybe I need a new player, though, because there are absolutely no scratches or marks on the disc. Anyway - I love the DVD. I love Pixies. There are some older songs on there that I'd never heard, and they're so great live that I loved those songs immediately. The live songs are from a concert in 1988, so they were in their prime. I'd buy this DVD - it's inexpensive and well worth the delay.

One of the greatest music DVD's I've ever seen
This DVD is splitted in 4 sections and all of them rock. First, the concert (Sex and Death Tour) is composed of songs mainly of Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa (when Pixies were at the peak in Europe). This is the best part of the DVD. Second, the "On The Road" short is pretty funny and Kim Deal is there most of the time. Third, "Gouge" is an awsome detail-oriented documentary with interviews with the band members and with other well respected musicians such as David Bowie and Thom Yorke. And finally fourth, the videos. This part offers 7 Pixies videos.Overall this DVD is great! The sound and video quality is amazing. A very good release from 4AD.

A Basic item for all pixies fan's
Great 5.1 dolby digital sound at the live part but an average 2.0 dolby stereo at the video section, anyway it's still a basic item if you consider a pixies fan

Stop Complaining
What a lot of moaners. For years nothing new about the Pixies, then a DVD with just about everything that existed on tape becomes available and people complain! The gig is brilliant - pure Pixies magic. The documenary is watchable. As a fan of a marginalised band I found it refreshing to see other (well known!) people who felt the same as me about the Pixies. For those not in the know this was origionaly a TV documentary. Kim Deal isn't there - a shame, but better something than nothing! I'm sure she had her reasons and rather they cracked on without her than didn't bother. The videos aren't great but that's late '80s indie for you. The tour footage isn't excellent either, but its all there is.In essence what someone has done is collected all the Pixies footage they could find and put it on a DVD. No complaints from me. It's still the best music DVD I have - because it has a Pixies concert on it. The rest is just a bonus; watch it if you're a full on Pixies fan, ignore it if you are a miserable sod.

Must for all Pixies Fans
I don't understand those reviewers that are disappointed with this DVD. Not only is there a full concert of the Pixies during the Surfer Rosa era with good sound quality, really capturing the moment, but lots of extra material such as the tour footage & promo videos. In fact if you turn it up loud & stick your head right up close to the telly, craning your neck for an hour you can almost imagine your back in the Town & Country Club, ten years younger watching the best live band that ever was!Excellent value from one of the greatest bands of all time!
