Felt wore out before balls lost pressure
Mixed feelings about these balls. In short, the outer felt wore out long before the balls lost pressure.I've been a long time user of Wilson products, especially the rackets, and have huge respect for the brand. Since tennis manufacturers make the majority of their profits from the tennis balls themselves, and so the thirst for profits encourages manufacturers to make balls that need replacing often (call me a cynic but this is the reality in most industries nowadays), I was curious to see if Wilson were indeed putting the environment first in making a truly long-lasting performance tennis ball. Personally I'd be happy to pay a bit more to save the planet...At first the Wilson Trinti did not disappoint - a touch on the heavy side but the bounce is superb and I was really impressed. After a few sessions I was starting to think that these were the best balls I've ever used; the pressure didn't seem to deteriorate one bit and they were still playing the same as when I'd first taken them out of the box even after 15 hours of play. Most normal balls tend to become unplayable by around that time, I've found. The Triniti's went on for a few more hours but then I noticed the outer felt wearing thin on one or two. By the end of that session (I estimate around 20 hours in total by now), the worst one was becoming quite ragged (see photo). Interestingly, the ball was still bouncing totally fine and we just carried on using it, but spin was beginning to be affected and for serious use its life was over. To be fair, the rest of that box went on for another session or two, totalling 25+ hours on average. In terms of value for money these are definitely a slight improvement on regular balls, and in terms of the environment they are an even more noticeable step in the right direction, but I'd like to see Wilson go even further and produce a ball where the felt lasts as long as the compressed inner - THAT would really reduce wastage.
