Q: Will it hold more than one brush?

Depending on the type of brush you use this sponge holder can hold 1-3 brushes. Choose brushes with handles that are less wide. For example in my sponge and brush holder I have a dish scrub brush (1" wide handle x 9" tall), a bottle brush (1" wide handle x 11" tall) and a straw brush (1/2" wide handle x 12" tall). The sponge holds them all in place.

Plugs are not provided for the sponge holder. This sponge holder works with sinks that have an edge for the sponge holder to sit on or if you would like the sponge holder to sit on the kitchen counter and would like to keep water off your counter pair with the scarlettwares sponge holder and dish soap tray that can be found here on amazon.

Q: What it the size of the taller opening in inches across and height? I am wondering if a liquid soap container would fit?

It is 5in tall, 2 1/8 to 1/16 across. I put my Dawn bottle; tight fit. Takes two hands to get out. I hate the back of the sink to look cluttered so I use this for the sponge, dishbrush, tiny little straw brushes. Then I put the liquid soap in a cute dispenser. You can buy one from Amazon but also cute and cheaper, I bought dispenser jar lids that fit right on canning jars I already have. One for hand soap, one for Dawn. An idea! Also on Amazon they come in black and in copper colored. Black ones are junky.
