The rope did have a smell but after airing out for a few hours it went away.

I use this jute for many home decor projects. I have ordered it twice, and both rolls have been consistent in quality. The four strands make it easier to use for wrapping and splicing when necessary. It does have a strong petroleum smell when first removing the plastic wrapping, which eventually dissipates after a few days. This rope is nicely twisted and has fewer messy fibers than less expensive jute might have, which means less singeing and treating for the finished product. The jute came nicely packaged in a double wrap and is a wonderful light natural color. I will continue to purchase this jute as long as the price is reasonable to do so.

This product smells like it was soaked in gasoline before shipping. Unacceptable as it was intended for my cat’s scratching post. Returned.
