Don't count the turns to try and figure out your rod length. Just run it up until there is no rocker lash left and measure the distance between the screw faces with a caliper. The reason I only gave it 3 stars is because comp cams website says this tool is 8.8" collapsed, I assumed that was true, performed rod length check per Moses Luddel's recommendation for a jeep engine and added the recommended .040" of an inch to get my desired lifter preload. After doing so I though I'd measure the overall length before I ordered the new rods (that old school saying goes- measure twice cut once) and sure as rain, it was off from my math by .025. This tool measures out at an actual length of 8.825" collapsed, which is huge when dealing with thousandths of an inch on something that has to be precise!So steps as follows for a jeep:1) Install rocker arm assembly for desired cylinder and ensure cylinder is at TDC (top dead center)2) Slide checker into lifter gallery and ensure seated into lifter.3) Extended checker tool by rotating top portion counterclockwise until bottomed out between lifter and rocker arm.4) Measure distance between the screw faces with a dial or digital caliper.5) Add caliper measurement to checker tool length (8.825" with the tool I received). So A+8.825= rod length before lifter preload.6) Add lifter preload to equation (.040" in my case) and boom, you have your desired pushrod length.MEASURE TWICE, ORDER PARTS ONCE!

Like others here mine bent during use. To be fair, I am running springs for a solid roller cam. This tool would likely work fine for hydraulic applications. They should spec a max spring tension these can be used with. If they do I didn't see it and therefore mine failed. I was able to get the measurements I needed before it bent so in that respect it did what I needed it to.If like me, you are running a solid roller cam with high spring pressures I'd look elsewhere.Edit: As someone pointed out in the comments, this checker is not intended to be used with your actual valve springs. You are supposed to use low tension checking springs. Strangely, I knew this and originally gave the checker 3 stars because it bent. In reality I used it improperly and I was still able to get the measurement I needed. I now changed my review to 5 stars because it did what I needed it to do even though I used it incorrectly.

Spend the extra money on the better version without the adjusting nuts.With the "Magnum" version the action on the threading was incredibly stiff to where I had to put it in a vice to get it to back out. Also, if you're working with aluminum heads, the adjusting nuts won't clear guideplates, so you have to remove them to install which means an unnecessary pain in the ass. This is the review I wish I had read before I bought the cheaper version.

The threading was a little tough to turn every once in a while, but otherwise worked fine. Depending on your heads it can be tough to reach the knurled part of the adjuster though. I have a closed valley engine and reasonably tall head walls that made it tough to reach my fingers down to turn the adjuster, but every engine will be different. Still did the job fine.

This tool worked very well and told me a ton about my valve train. I logged down each valve and measured them. Found a couple valves .044" SHORT of the others (used car I just bought and was having trouble with.). I have 7-8 inch micrometers so I was able to tell right to the thousandth of an inch.

This pushrod length checker works just like any other. the locking nuts can interfere with your measurements if they get into the way, but otherwise it worked great for me. I now have the version without the locking nuts, but still wouldn't hesitate to use this again.To those saying that their checker bent, you shouldn't be using your regular valve springs when rotating the engine over with this checker. It is not as strong as a .080-.135 wall pushrod. For those applications where you want to check rocker sweep, use a set of checker springs, or if you're using dual valve springs, just use the inner spring. This pushrod checker isn't meant to take the 400+lbs of spring pressure.

Excellent little tool very easy to use and saves a lot of time.. Although i did have some trouble getting the gripped end of the tool through the push rod guide plates (those cant be removed during installation as it would effect the height of the rocker arm and push rod length) it was still a great thing to have well built and very handy excellent for sbf 302-351ci I also wanted to note that the length is easily changed so i recommend measuring the length both before and after checking as it is extremely easy to move/ alter the length of the checker even when you are not trying..this does not affect the quality of the tool if anything it makes it better because it ensures the most accurate reading!

I used this to spec out the pushrod length for my aluminum head swap out that I just finished. Without this tool, it would have been "trial and error" which is costly from a time and money perspective. Get one...you won't be disappointed....

Decided to buy the more expensive Comp Cams one because I associated them with quality. That was my mistake.$40 later and I’m stuck with a pushrod that doesn’t thread in and out even after being heavily lubricated and the help of vice grips.Won’t make this mistake twice.

Works as needed, but should come with at least some instructions going over its size and use.

Good tool. I needed shorter pushrods and this got me the length I needed. Wish it had detents to keep the tool from changing length when removing from engine to measure it. Each full turn is just shy of .005”

Great tool for the money , cheap insurance when mix matching LS engine parts

Received tool exactly as pictured, works excellent in LSx applications, highly recommend if you're on the fence this is a really high quality piece, much better than the threaded rod with a nut style from competitors!
