What is the advantage of this fence, over the existing fence on the miter saw?

It allows for the measuring device to mount properly for use. I had an earlier version of miter saw and i could not secure it to the original fence. A newer saw and fence may work?

Can a measure shoebase?

Yes but it may require a spacer depending on the width of the shoebase to ensure it remains in contact with the wheel

Does this work with the 12 craftsmen slide miter saw?

Probably, this is not a good answer but I have a generic saw and bought their adapter which was way too thick, ended up making my own mounting plate from a sheet of steel . If your saw is not listed as compatible, don't buy their adapter
