I love the book. I have followed the author's blog throughout the years and have always enjoyed the stories about his childhood, his family, and his hometown. While many stories in this book can be found here and there in the blog, it is nice to read them in a cohesive and chronological order.In the 400+ pages book, we learn about Hieu's life story, from growing up poor in Hanoi in the 80s to struggling through dark times in his earlier adulthood. Then, the author walks us through his encounters with the communist police, who tried to suppress his voices regarding on-going social issues in Vietnam. It ends with the major life event of the author when he came to Weimar with a writer's scholarship.I would encourage people to read this book if they don't know about the author or have not read his blog. It is a very good read. On the other hand, if they follow the author's blog, they won't miss out much without reading this.There are few minor issues, like some of the dialogues are not formatted properly. Hopefully, they will be fixed when the book is reprinted.
