Don't Worry, Douglas!

I had previously purchased Hugless Douglas to read to the grandkids. My brother's name is Douglas, so there was a connection. The kids only visit once or twice a year, but they immediately ask for the book. So when I heard they were coming for Christmas, I decided to buy another book in the series, and again, they loved it.

Don't Worry Douglas teaches children that when something goes wrong that parents and adults in their lives can be understanding and it is safe to tell them when they make a mistake. Douglas is a cut bear with a new hat and he manages to snag it and unwind it while he plays with his friends. My preschool children love this story and ask for it often on free choice book time.

Douglas the wonderful hugging bear is back and he is wearing a brand new hat. Well, sort of. Douglas' dad makes him his very own woolly red hat. Douglas loves it and trudges off to show his friends the sheep. He shows them how he can turn flips and cartwheels in his new fuzzy red hat. He whoops again and again, until he realizes his beautiful new wooly red hat that his dad made especially for him has come unraveled. Yikes! Oh no, what is Douglas to do? He worries. Douglas has to figure out a way to either fix the hat or tell his dad. Young readers will fall in love with Douglas all over again. The funny sheep are back with their silly antics. And at the back of the book are the funniest types of hats you will ever see. Parents, teachers and homeschoolers will love turning the pages together to see how Douglas gets himself out of this hilarious conundrum.

the book is about douglas who is a lovely boy-bear - the german version is about "paulchen". his father gives him a new bonnet and douglas is extraordinarily proud of it. unfortunately the bonnet is destroyed - as it often happens to children that they destroy something by showing it off. what to do? the message: just tell it daddy. the truth is the best way to cope with mess. i love it, my son too.

My daughters have never read any of these Douglas picture books before...this is their first. In this one, Douglas gets a new woolly hat from his Dad as a present. Overexcited like all children are when getting something new he immediately heads off to show his friends his new gift! The only problem is that in his excitement he ruins it and the wool runs loose and his hat becomes a ball of red thread! Douglas starts to worry about how he can put it back together and he also worries about what his Dad might say when he returns home to show the 'hat' now in one big lump. After some nail biting events trying to make things better his friends encourage Douglas to talk to his Dad and tell him the truth. Dad embraces Douglas and not only is all forgiven, Dad has something else in store for Douglas that puts a smile back on his face. A great story to encourage your children not to worry and to teach them that accidents do happen. This story creates the perfect opportunity to tell your children that no matter what they do that as their mum or dad, you will always love them! A beautifully illustrated picture book with a section of 'designer hats' at the back that has my 3 year old in stitches! Highly recommended!
