BEST NEW ROCK BOOK SINCE THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY!
The next best thing to seeing shows at Fillmore East is reading this book. It's rich in anecdotes told by the rockers themselves, stories about Hendrix, Lennon, Janis, Daltrey, Rod Stewart, Sly, Zappa, the Allman Brothers. Steve Miller, Roger McGuinn, Jorma, Jack Casady, Dave Davies, Carl Palmer and many more stars tell them in their own words. There are the backstage stories too, with groupies, dealers and all kinds of crazy going on.It's all there, the light shows, the live albums, the crowds, and larger-than-life Bill Graham, a guy equally loved and feared for his volcanic temper. And the photos. The book says many were never before published and I believe it. I love the look back at the old Anderson and Village Theaters and the East Village of the mid-60s. The posters and buttons of the day are mind-blowing.Thanks for making Xmas shopping easy this year!

Disappointing
Having lived in New York City and attended many, many, shows at the Fillmore East, I was looking forward to reading this book. And yes,I was disappointed. It is a collection of comments and memories of people who worked there, and musicians who played there. Some well known, some not. The problem is that it gets repetitive. Yes, there are a few glimmers that give you an insight into what the Fillmore was all about, but it could have been so much better. Maybe a narrative that talked about the times, the community, the shows, the zeitgeist of the era, with some quotes added. And one omission that I clearly thought would be included: a timeline detailing all the concerts at the Fillmore. I would think that would be a fundamental part if the story. Photos range from poor to good. Nothing new. Again, just disappointing.

From one who was fortunate to have gone there.
Was a great look back at a relic of the time. I was an oblivious attendee at the time. This brings a much fuller story of what was a great time and place.

This is the one I've been waiting for
I've probably read every book of Fillmore East, that great NYC venue from the 60s, but this is the tops. Full of great interviews and photos that bring you right back to those days. I won't give it away but Steve Miller has some AMAZING quotes about Bill Graham and the Fillmore that I've never seen before. A must-read.
