they are big so it helps to keep you from coming too close to the ear drum. It would not go through the canal to the ear drum so I didn't have to worry about injuring my dog. If you are using the smaller q tips, you have to be careful how far you go down the canal. They held up and none have broken, I would say if you are breaking the wood part, you may be pressing down too hard, and you don't need to put that much pressure in your dog's ear.

I was excited when I found these extra large cotton swabs, but was disappointed on my first experience! I have a Labrador Retriever who has flappy ears that like to trap water. When I inserted the swab to try to clean his ear, the swab detached immediately and I had to remove it manually. These looked the same as the ones in the Veterinarian office, but the quality is not the same. I have attempted to use multiple times with the same result. I now have about 90 left that I have no use for.
