Do you have to hold the button down for it to work or do you juat push the button down to turn it on and walk away from the unit?

You press and hold the button for about three seconds to turn it on or off. Once on, if no lightning is detected, the device automatically shuts off after 30 minutes of inactivity. If it detects lightning, it resets that 30 minute countdown.

What is the difference between strikealert ii personal lightning detector pager and strikealert personal lightning detector, both sold by amazon?

They look like the same unit to me. Strikealert II is sold by Amazon and Strikealert is sold by Buckeye Sales so it may just be the description they put on the site. The unit is made by Robic and appears to be the Strikealert M747.
