Q: Will this case only hold 48 pencils? I am adding to my derwent inktense pencil collection, and need it hold 51.

Q: will a sketchbook fit?

A slim (cahier-style) sketchbook of appropriate dimensions might fit, depending on how many pencils you have and how thick they are. But the pencil case is not really designed to take anything other than pencils and there's not a lot of free room once filled. If you want to carry a sketchbook inside, I would suggest use the loops on only one side of each opening and making sure your sketchbook is a slim one.

Q: Is this actually speedball brand?

I have 6 of these cases (with leather covers), in various sizes; 2 are stamped “Global”, the others are stamped “Speedball”. Except for the brand name stamped into the leather, my cases are identical in materials, workmanship, height, and (where applicable) width. I am very happy with the quality of all of my cases. The packaging says that the cases are made in China, I suspect that they are then stamped with the tradename of the ordering vendor. My most recently purchased cases are all labeled “Speedball”. My cases that hold 12 pencils per “leaf“ have elastic bands that are sized to hold four pencils per section. My larger cases, sized to hold 18 or 24 pencils per “leaf“ hold three pencils per elastic band section. I hope that this helps.
