does this use standard 8 hole sanding discs or are the discs bosch specific?

All 8 holes disk with a 5" diameter fit, or that is my finding to date.

Is the 6ah battery too cumbersome to use with the sander?

No, absolutely not. We use the battery with no difficulty, it is a great tool for sanding doors and furniture. It is easy to handle and not cumbersome. I am a 72 year old female with average upper body strength.
