Works Well, Should be Standard Equipment
If you own a Baratza grinder, you're probably a serious coffee drinker who enjoys different kinds of coffee. This hopper greatly facilitates switching bean types on your grinder. By closing the valve, a full hopper can be removed leaving only a few beans in the chute below. On my Preciso, most of those can be removed by hand or it can be completely vacuumed out with a hand vac so the few remaining beans don't contribute to your next single cup pourover. As a scientist with considerable experience in packaging, I find the"sit on top" lid a non issue as far as bean freshness goes. There will always be oxygen in the head space of any bean hopper and the grinder is open to air exchange both through chute and lid. Its not a hermetically sealed container where you can expect carbon dioxide from fresh roasted beans to displace oxygen through a valve. In any case, unless you drink very little coffee, this hopper holds only enough for a week at most so if your beans are fresh, they'll be OK through normal use periods. I roast a lot of what we drink so bean freshness isn't an issue. This is the hopper that Baratza should supply as std equipment rather than an option, especially on their pricier models. We use 2 of them to facilitate rotations. For example when we get guests who drink decaf. we can easily make good quality regular and decaf (well, at least as far as decaf quality is possible) and not stick the guests with plonk. When using this hopper, always be certain the bean valve is open before grinding so you don't accidentally damage burrs in the grinder.

upgrade for the Encore
my original cone hopper cracked in transit (or something, not sure exactly), and Baratza was out of stock for a replacement, so I got this instead. Was instructed to remove the wing-nut on the cone burr, and fold down the gasket, but now this fits and it's easy to remove the hopper without emptying it - which is nice for creating and general maintenance. Also, it looks fancier.

so it is no good for storage
Bought this so I could have 2. I find that this one fits looser on the grinder than the hopper that came with the grinder. I wish the lid fit snugly as to keep the beans fresh. The lid simply rest on the top of the hopper, so it is no good for storage. Also, the hopper is a little on the small side. They sell an extension but it is too tall for my cupboards. Don't get me wrong - I love the Forte grinder,, but the hopper lid is poorly designed.

Beware
Beware of this product. With minimal use it first cracked where the metal inserts and then a large piece broke off. We have only had this since March and are now faced with either buying another grinder or facing endless replacements of the coffee hopper.
