It states that this is a good protector for idle/stored firearms but would you say that it is good to lubricate it and the moving parts for firing?

I only applied it to the outer parts. I take all my guns for a spin at least once every two months

Is this grease intended to be used instead of gun oil after cleaning your handgun?

No, gun grease and gun oil, though they are both lubricants , has two different functions.   While gun oil is used to prevent rust due to moisture accumulating on the weapon due to moisture rain or the temperature difference between the weapon and the air.  For example, a cold glass of water will cause condensation on the outside of the weapon.   On the other hand, gun grease is used in moving contact parts.  Such as the slide on an automatic.  Any place where parts rub together, a slight film of gun grease will aid in parts to move smoothly without friction.  Thereby preventing jams.   Although gun oil will work, it is not sustainable as grease.    Think of a car’s oil Viscosity of 10W30.  The oil provides the range of  oil viscosity needed by the car.  With guns, the lubricants are separate into oil and grease.

Is this a honey-colored, clear, near gel consistency, or gray/white as I have seen reported?  40 yrs ago it was clear honey, with a scent. Thanks.

It’s the same color as years ago.  I’ve been using Hoppe’s for many years.  The grease is white like always, and the oil is honey colored as always.

is this to minimize friction on gun parts?

Yes... just like and oil/grease, this will minimize wear that occurs from friction and help make your firearm easier to clean, running better and prevent rust as well.  I use this on my AR15.
