Excellent descriptions and imagery!
I bought this book a while ago as I've heard of the author, but I only recently started reading the book. I can say that I judged the book by its metaphorical cover, and I never felt inclined to begin reading it since I could tell that it would be very different from any book I've ever read before. However, as soon as I started reading the first page, it instantly drew me in and I eagerly finished the book. One thing to note is that this is a very short book, but it is PACKED. It gets right into the story from the first page and there is never a dull period in the book. It looks small like it could be a children's book, but the writing is far from it. The descriptions are very vivid, to the point where you can see it happening in your mind as a sort of animated film, and the illustrations throughout the book help add to this. Another thing to note about this book is that although it is fantasy and packed with adventure, it has some degree of realism in it. The emotions, the struggles, and the decisions that the main character makes all are written in a way that makes it so life like. It is as if we can feel it ourselves. It also includes a lot of parallels to real life issues such as slavery, racism, stereotypes, and prejudice in a way that allows readers to make these connections and reflect on society rather than forcing these ideas onto us. I could not stop myself from continuously pausing to think about how brilliant of a writer Myranda is. She truly is filled with so much talent and an amazing gift. After finishing the first book, I have now purchased the next few and am eager for them to come in!

Loved it!
This book was so exciting to read! It’s a fast-paced, quick read that will have you at the edge of your seat. I love how real this book is from the very beginning—Brent’s life is difficult because of who he was born as and there is no sugarcoating it. It’s definitely gut wrenching and there are a lot of parallels between Brent’s experience and slavery/segregation. Can’t wait to read the next one!
