great nutrient boost
I recently got ahold of a packet of these so I decided to give them a try. I've bought chia seeds in the past (usually from Bob's Red Mill), but they weren't very portable because it was at least a pound of chia seeds! So I love the little individual serving packets that these chia seeds come in. (Be aware, though, that it may be hard to get all the seeds out; static electricity or something makes a few of them stick to the inside of the foil packet.)I tried these in my morning oatmeal. I eat extra thick rolled oats with dried cranberries, cinnamon, and walnuts. So I just added a bit of extra hot water to that mix and stirred in the chia seeds. I did not notice a difference in taste, so these have a pretty neutral taste. This is important for mixing in to other dishes (salads, smoothies, etc.). You can just use your regular recipe and not worry about messing up the flavor of your food by adding these. These did cause a bit of a texture change in my oatmeal; they absorbed a lot of water and became a little gelatinous. Since this is already pretty much what texture of oatmeal is, it doesn't make a big difference. (Despite what I have read in another review, I am not sure this would work very well as a coffee additive. It is definitely still a solid, even after soaking for a bit.)For a little packet of seeds, these have a pretty awesome nutrient profile, with lots of vitamins and minerals (but no sodium). There's also plenty of fiber and there are omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids. Please note that the omega 3 fatty acid is alpha linoleic acid (ALA), which is not utilized by the body as efficiently as other omega 3s (DHA and EPA). If you are really interested in reducing cholesterol as the reason for purchase, you'd be better off with a fish oil or vegan DHA + EPA supplement. However, if you are interested in obtaining more nutrients from whole, raw foods, or want a small protein or fiber boost in the morning, these are a great addition to breakfast cereals. Another thing to try is to soak them in water for an hour or so and then incorporate them into homemade bread dough.
