One of the best Scifi Fun series killed off too soon.
Like dinosaurs, of course you do.Like sci time travel, That's why you're here right?Like Dystopian future and Prehistoric Past, uh huh me too.cool now that we established all that, buy it. Sadly don't get your hopes TOO up, it basically ends of a cliff hanger because network executive do NOT like dinosaurs.

Over Hyped, Under Delivered
DVDs:Extras includeDisk 1 - Deleted scenes from the pilot. Shows the dark path the show could've traveled down and fortunately didn't. - Director's video diary. Pretty good and no ego self-stroking I've seen in others.Disk 3 - Deleted scene from Vs., single, that really doesn't add anything.Disk 4 - Occupation/Resistance are run together, for a two hour finale, sweet. Click to Episodes to select "View with Extended Scenes." The first is heartwarming, the second a mild wrench at the heart, next is glimpse of Lucas' dark side (like you would need anymore clues). If you're like me and always thought Malcolm was also a bit tipsy, you'll know what a drunk Malcolmus really looks like. There's a couple Shannon "farewells" scattered toward the end. - Commentary (broadcast version) Stephen Lang, Rene Echevarria and Brannon Braga was easy to listen to. No excessive fawning. Balanced between production, story and cast. - Quick series synopsis by select episode - Dino discussion. The ShowOn the surface it looks like something new and fresh. But if you've been watching or reading sci-fi as long as I have see you can see behind the curtain back to the 50s and 60s, maybe even the 40s movie serials. The science isn't that complicated; the weapons are sonic, and it's not a shockwave but a "sonic-wave" that results in when the meteor crashes into the colony. That's old school. Pick one simple element as the basis for the technology. Then you start to see slightly over the top character of Taylor in perspective; larger than life, hard to believe human. It's hard to tell if it was written that way or Stephan Lang's performance. But more than that, give it that western feel also from the same era. Anybody else recalling episodes of Bonanza while watching this? Who else began to see the colony's marines as cowboys? I kept expecting someone to break out an artificially grown horse or two. When viewed from this perspective, the series works. Drop two bits on the counter and spend Saturday afternoon watching the latest installment of a serial. Now take into consideration the "darker path" that the show could've gone as indicated by the removed scenes from the Pilot. This explains the "lighter" back tracking and listening to the commentary you begin to know what you suspected all along it was redone to be that Saturday morning show but sophisticated enough to hold a reminiscent adult's attention.Does the show succeed at this level, yes. Is it trivial, not really. It had some bones and muscle to it. Cudos go to the cast for all being on the same page, had one of the regular cast missed the point and played it as camp (as it could've easily have lended itself too) it would've been lost from the beginning. But they played it straight.Cudos also to the producers, I'm sure there was big cost consideration in this, but for making it more about the story and the characters then the science and the special effects. My second favorite line is Cmdr Taylor taking a metaphorical step back from Jim Shannon say, "you're not to ask to explain how all this works, are you?"Why three stars?I liked the show enough to by the DVDs even though I have it recorded, the stories were tight with an interesting arc. Some of the characters (Malcolmus became a guilty favorite) were just plain fun to watch and I often thought "Taylor's posing" should become a drinking game. Thank you for the eye candy (most the men were in tight fitting clothes, interestingly all the women were not). They didn't go Battlestar Galactica dark side. However the buildup indicated it would be for a more mature audience, not kids specifically. All the touting of groundbreaking was misleading there was no new ground broken take a family and place them in primitive time, Swiss Family Robinson did that and this show has that feel; but most importantly ......they killed Wash.

An underachieving show that proves big budget can't carry poor stories
Terra Nova promises to be a good idea for a show at the start, but ultimately never rises above being average. This is mainly due to a lack of focus. What I mean by that is the show is trying to be a survival drama, a family show and a sci-fi, yet falling short on all three fronts due to weak writing. From the start, there's never any real sense that they're in a world requiring an urgency to survive or to adapt to a hostile environment. Their base is built and they've all got an endless supply of hi-tech equipment from the start. This becomes more nonsensical in the stories where the tech inevitably breaks down and they wonder why they're in the... without a clue. Even the first season of The 100 did a far better job.The main family are amicable and decently acted. But they are a bit generic and don't really have the spark to make the stories interesting. The rest of the cast are okay, but again no standout characters except one. I think they would have been in real trouble had they not cast Stephen Lang as Commander Taylor. The sets are good though and even the dinosaurs are too, despite looking a bit rubbery by today's standards. Apparently, this blew their budget though, which may partially explain the weak writing, which in turn inevitably led to dropped ratings then the show's cancellation after one season. The main question now is does this work as a standalone season to watch? Ironically, because the writing is so limited the answer is yes. There aren't many loose ends and, while the ending does hint at a second season, it finishes at a satisfactory point for an average show.

Mixed but good value.
A soapish version of Jurassic Park. Certainly family viewing sometimes bordering on the insipidly sweet but children of a certain age will lap it up (as well as some of us grownups!).Largely British and Australian actors with the odd American thrown in and filmed in Australia ----- why is it I'm thinking of 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' ?English language and English subtitles. Loads of bonus features which are fun.

Terra Nova - Deserves better than it got
This Series has so much to offer. It is a shame that it got cancelled. The general overview of Terra Nova is mankind has poisoned the earth and are dying out with no hope of surviving. So they send people back to the age of dinosaurs to start a new beginning and give mankind a hope of surviving. Terra Nova follows the Shannon family, and how they cope with the world around them and the dangers that are out there. Terra Nova probable would of done alot better than it did if they released it during the summer when all the bigger shows such as "The Walking Dead" and "Breaking Bad" were not being aired. But due it being released fall time it had to compete with already popular shows and it couldnt. Its a shame really, as this has so much potential and is an enjoyable series to watch. A second season would of been a huge hit and would have been successful as everything is set up nicely from the first. I guess we can only wish as a second season is not going to happen. Recommend this series if your into dinosaurs or want something different yet still good to watch.

What film were they making?
It's often enlightening to read others' reviews. The divergence of opinion, I feel, exemplifies that the creators hadn't decided? weren't allowed to decide? what film they were making. So, it sits uneasily between three genres: a family film, an action film and a film that poses interesting questions. And because there was no decision, major potential audiences fall away and give one star reviews, because none of these are developed in any depth - side from the fundamental that the scenario is artifical and treated, as others have noted, with lashings of Disney syrup. You experience stock shallow characters and characterisations, beautiful frontier homes where everything unfailingly works and some formulaic story lines. It looks great, but that doesn't make up for no tension.

By far the best part is the extras at the end of the ...
By far the best part is the extras at the end of the first disc on how they made it. Almost worth skipping straight to the end! The set is impressive, the CGI is OK, the dinos are a bit plastic, and as ever, everyone either mumbles or talks too fast. Father and son both come over as stupid, and I can hardly catch a word the elder daughter says because she talks so fast, and how father escaped from jail is a complete blur. Having watched the first disc and knowing now how they made it, I expect the rest of the episodes to be much more interesting. Jurassic Park it is not, but harmless entertainment - if you can stomach the irritating characters!
