Popeye (DVD)Based on the long-running comic strip created by E.C. Segar (and less on the animated cartoons created by Max Fleischer, which were decidedly di fferent in tone and approach), Popeye follows the sailor man with the mi ghty arms (played by Robin Williams in his first major film role) as he arrives in the seaside community of Sweethaven in search of his long-lo st father. Popeye meets and quickly f alls for the slender Olive Oyl (Sh elley Duvall, in the role she was born to play), but Olive's hand has al ready been promised to the hulking Bluto (Paul Smith), of whom Olive ca n say little except, well, he's large. Eventually, Popeye and Olive are brought togethe r by Swee' Pea (Wesley Ivan Hurt), an adorable foundling , and Popeye finally meets his dad, Poopdeck Pappy (Ray Walston). Direct or R obert Altman in no way tempered his trademark style for this big-bu dget family opus, crowding the screen with a variety of character s and allowing his cast to overlap as much dialogue as they want.]]>

Popeye is still a fun movie to watch.
I remember watching this in the theaters. It's still entertaining to watch. The movie stays close to the source material. There is even an intro cartoon clip in the beginning. This was Robin Williams first lead role in a film. The only thing, from what I gathered online, that Robin didn't like about the movie, was that he had to dub his lines after the film was done, in order for the audience to understand what he was saying. Other than that, he enjoyed doing the movie. The actor, in reality, who stood out, was Shelley Duvall's role as Olive Oyl. Shelley loved the film throughout her career. She was made to play the character. The movie itself, was great, in part due to being close to the source material. Which is something many movies based on games, comics, anime and cartoons, fail at. If you do it right, it'll work and make money. When you change it, it'll fail and you lose money. All the actors did great at portraying the characters from the comics and cartoons. The digital copy code still works. In this movie, because production stuck close to the source material which it was based on, the movie is fun to watch. It has humor, adventure, a great cast of actors, a great soundtrack, setting, and atmosphere. The movie has lots of character development. The only downside was the ending. It was rushed, but that was due to production having trouble filming in the water, especially with the octopus. People wanted to see Bluto get his butt kicked after all the trouble he put Popeye through, but instead, Bluto was punched out, the giant octopus was punched into the air, and Bluto, turned yellow, swam away in fear. The ending scene where the characters are singing, dancing and the music was great. In the end, if you love Popeye, you should check out the film. The Blu-ray is cheap, and has a good amount of extra's to watch.
