Fantastic product!
Was out in the woods and remembered I had put this in my fire starter kit so I decided to test it out. It works like a charm! The rod spits large sparks and I can get a fire going in 2-3 strikes. It works best when you scrape the black coating off first to make the sparks really fly! Totally recommend!

Works pretty great
Great product. I just got it to start preparing for what I believe will be inebitable with the covid situation. Its a good and easy to use product. Pretty sturdy, good size and it looks badass.

Fire Starter: Solid 5 Stars.....Bonus features, not so much.
I purchased this fire starter for an upcoming trip to the Canadian Rockies, where I'll be doing some camping and hiking. Once you strike it a few times and get passed the initial coating, its sparks perfectly. The unit is light and compact and can easily fit in your pocket... However, the scrapper does have "teeth" to it, while not very prominent, there is potential to possibly snag your pocket lining or irritate through thin clothing. I'd recommend putting this in a small cloth bag if you were to carry it on your person if doing a lot of hiking or climbing. If you're carrying a backpack, it can easily stow away in a small pocket. If I were to base my rating on the fire starter alone, it would absolutely get 5 stars easy. The other features are a compass and whistle. The compass is aesthetically pleasing and that's the best I can say about it. Do not rely on it, sub par unfortunately. The whistle is a smidge better, it works but takes some effort and doesn't have the volume/pitch that I would really like in an emergency situation. It'll get your dog's attention, though. Its not taking up any additional room, so its really just a bonus. To recap: Fire starter is perfect for my purposes- solid 5 stars. Whistle and compass- bonus features that come up short. At this price point (close to 8 bucks), I'm incredibly happy with my purchase and do recommend. Pair with a small tin of char cloth. All fire starters are useless if you can't get dry tinder.

Easy to use
Its lightweight and easy to use. I love the extra features. The whistle is easy to hear and while the compass is tiny, its functional. Its going to make a great addition to my adventure backpack.

Works well
Started my first fire with this guy. Had never used flint before. So I'm sitting in my room drinking beer and I shaved some of the metal onto one square of TP. Struck the flint and Boom. I had fire. I smothered the fire out and ran over to fan my smoke detector so it would stop going off. No harm done. Fire starter works really well.

All-around Quality product
This is a quality firestarter. The whistle is very loud and sharp, which would easily be heard at a long distance. The compass is true. The striker can affect it, but as long as you don't hold it against the compass it is perfectly fine. The striker and rod throw great sparks without much effort. I am very pleased with this buy and wouldn't hesitate to purchase another.

I figured I better practice with it before I take it hunting
My firestarter arrived today on 05/09/2018, I figured I better practice with it before I take it hunting, hiking or camping with me to get myself comfortable with it. And to get use to how to work/use it in case of an emergency. So with all this being said and done, I'm stoke I bought this item and intend to buy it again. It was really easy to use and most definitely works as well worth the money!! Lisa C.

Creates large sparks
Very difficult to use by itself. Works perfectly with 3-5 strong strikes over a cotton ball dipped in vasailine. Prepare cotton balls in advance of an emergency or camping. Place the vaseline dipped cotton ball in the middle of a small pile of thread-like loose bark, small dry leaves and small dry twigs. Once these catch add larger dry materials to build the fire.

The rod is approximately 2.7 inches long and has a diameter of about 0.3 inches. The handle measures around 2.2 inches, feels solid, and provides a good grip. It easily ignites tinder, producing good sparks. It's important to find the right tinder to start a fire, regardless of which ferrocerium rod you're using.
