Don't have a ruler handy, but I would guess between 1" to 2". **Q: can you run the DTC cable from controller to a 40" extension or do you need to hit an 80" section first?** A: There is no technical reason why you couldn't; although you would have to dismantle the original connection of the 80" to do so. **Q: "Male ends are removable to make female" -- Can they then be placed in a different female end to make it male?** A: Litcessory has a variety of pieces that interchange to create male and female connections. Careful not to bend the metal rods so connection is solid. I wrapped all Connections with electrical tape (or electrica shrink plastic) to secure all connection points once joined and operational.
