A compact, yet comprehensive design resource, expertly selected by graphic design’s leading historians The slab serif typeface―in their classic form, wood types made for large-scale posters, ads, and newspapers―may not be as all-purpose as the gothic or sans serif, but it is equal, if not more powerful, in graphic appeal. Since being introduced in the nineteenth century, slabs have become ubiquitous and are today as popular as ever. Slabs come from a genre of Egyptian typefaces (some of the leading slabs are called Cairo and Sphinx) brought back to France by Napoleon and marketed in specimen sheets and books as representing a glorious heritage brought to the present. In 1931, Morris Fuller Benton created the Stymie typeface, a reworking of a slab serif type popular in Europe at that time: Memphis. The IBM logo is one of the most famous slab serif marks. The serifs were often exaggerated so they would not result in simply beautiful letterforms but would be functionally superior to other faces. Slabs, therefore, came in many iterations and were eventually recognized as a face with many characters―and nationalities. Following the cult typography volumes Scripts , Shadow Type , and Stencil Type , this new volume comprises an artfully curated selection of hundreds of international and classic examples to inspire fresh and unexpected typographic ideas. 500+ illustrations, 450+ in color Review: Excellent book, but the cover fell off after 5 minutes! - Not going to slam the author for a second hand book about the faulty cover. I'm a creative and glued it back on. It's an excellent resource! Review: Beautiful book! Great content!... Vary bad binding... - Like most of the authors' books, this is not an instructional book. It is a compilation of the work of different artists that serves as inspiration and reference. The content of the book is excellent, the print quality is good, but unfortunately the binding is very bad and it peels off... you have to treat it carefully. If you want a variety of references to inspire you when developing your roasted lettering projects, this book is a good buy.

Great book, worst binding quality
Awesome content, Louise and Steven have made a fantastic collection of books including this one. The BIG BUT, the quality of the binding, awful awful awful work by IMAGO from China. And here I'm realizing my book is not the only one with the problem.

Great content, very poor binding.
Great content and will make an excellent reference book. Unfortunately, like many others have noted, the binding on this book is awful and the book cover is partially detached now. I’m sure as I continue to use it the cover will completely fall off. I will set the book on a shelf and see if I can figure out a way reattach the cover.

Good to know mine wasn't the only book and that ...
I agree with other reviews; once you open the book, the pages come apart from the glue. I did not have any problems with Steven Heller's other books, Scripts and Shadow Type. Good to know mine wasn't the only book and that it is a manufacturing mishap. Great book otherwise!

Great content. Poorly constructed.
Beautifully printed with lots of wonderful fonts. I’ve used it many times as reference and it has fallen apart. I wish I could have it re-bound or that they would print a better version.

Falls Apart
Falls apart first time opening it. Completely detached from cover and glue falls off binding. Despite the book now being coverless after viewing one time...Its a wonderful reference book. Love it. Glad I have it, wish it was put together better.

Not for Beginners
I just use it to see the pictures and get inspired..no detailed instructions given .. few sample fonts are given. Not for beginners.. please check other available options and get your basics correct before you buy this one.. otherwise you will end up wasting money and feeling bad
