We use sewing machine oil to lubricate it and works pretty well.

Q: Has anyone used this on a cats butt area?

Yes! In fact, we have a lazy cat that doesn't groom himself well. As such he'll occasionally get small mats around his back hips. This trims them out without any issues. If your cat's hair is really fine you'll want to move in short, small stokes for your cat's comfort.
