No special pockets. There are only four pockets - two front and two back. My phone fits fine in either front pocket.

Q: What would be a suitable size for someone who has the hips 36 inches???

Yes...buy one size for warm wash cotton shrinkage

Q: What men’s waist size is a medium?

Select the desired waist size. I ordered 34 waist and the fit is perfect (comfortable, not tight) based on other pants/shorts I have owned. If you don't know the waist size of the person you're getting these for, sneak into their closet and read the tags to get the waist size for pants/shorts they are comfortable in. The term "Medium" is too broad.
