don't buy kindle
We bought this for kindle on the iPad, also tried it on the iPhone. We were not happy with the format or the size at all. The pages only take up a small middle section of the screen and the words are almost too small to read. It also takes away from the illustrations. Instead of pages it's more like a straight line of pages which makes it tricky for kids to keep their place. The content of the book is good, but I don't think the kids will fully appreciate it because of its size and format. It looks as if someone just scanned in tiny copies of the book, I wish they pages could be enlarged and viewed one at a time. For the price I wish we had just ordered the paper back version. :(

Book has lots of useful information, but too advanced for early elementary
This book is a very thorough explanation of how people have figured out ways to tell time (including time of day, time of year, etc.) throughout history. I have often seen it recommended for use in early elementary classrooms in conjunction with a unit on telling time, i.e. reading a clock. However, the book is really written at a more advanced level and students will not be able to understand it unless they already have quite a bit of background knowledge not typical of students at this level. For example, it explains the ways that the ancient Egyptians and Romans used to tell time, but this will not make any sense to a student who has never heard of these ancient civilizations. It also has explanations of the earth's rotation around the sun and the moon's rotation around the earth, another difficult concept for a student in K-2 to grasp because it is so abstract. Overall the book is very well done, but I gave it 3 stars and wrote this review for those teaching early elementary who have seen this book listed as a good literature connection for a unit on reading a clock. I would not recommend this book for this purpose.

excellent
I teach 2nd grade and my students love this thought-provoking book. I haven't found another that is better for getting students to think, and wonder, about time and how it is measured.

Excellent
This is an excellent book for allages. My 5 and 7 yr old kids loved it and learned a lot. It sparked their curiosity and led us onto a science experiment about the phases of the moon.

learning experience
shocking these reviews are not that great, i am confused by that? if you are looking for 3 great reads from this author, Robert E. Wells. they are stocked full of learning materials ... i guess it truly depends on how or where your child is in their life ... are the able to understand the info ... enjoy the knowledge??! great illustrations. well done. I read, 3 of his books: "What's Smaller Than a Pygmy Shrew?", "Did a Dinosaur Drink This Water?", and "How Do You Know What Time It Is?". (They are listed by my favorite... all great, just really was pulled in by the name "Pygmy Shrew" i know the name, was it from a tv show, thinking, thinking??! and i always love Dinos) all must reads.
