I use this to clean barrels and pots with stains. Works very well.

What makes this product superior to cheaper cleaning alternatives is that it not only cleans well but rinses out so easily. For instance when using just straight oxyclean it is much harder to completely rinse out and it would leave a scale inside my corny kegs forcing me to then have to use vinegar to dissolve the scale. Getting rid of the smell of vinegar would be another task. Even though I think PBW is kind of expensive you get what you pay for and it has proven to be a neccesity to my world class brewing and I will continue to pay more in order to use it.

My understanding is that PBW was designed to be a safe, all-purpose cleaner for one of the big brewing companies. In my experience, it's been very effective when combined with hot water from the tap. I've seen it almost instantly dissolve hops, grain, extract, and yeast residue from the inside of fermenters. I've used it to clean the machining oils off my stainless steel fermenter before i used it. Recently, when I acquired a RIMS brewing system called "The Grainfather" through its US Kickstarter campaign, they recommend cleaning with PBW before the first use and after every use. Since I hope to be brewing a lot with The Grainfather, I decided it was time to step up to a more cost-effective package of PBW. The smaller one-pound container was used up pretty quickly.Depending on your cleaning needs and the volume of PBW you require, you will probably use 1-2 ounces of this stuff at a time. That means this one container should get you through 64 or more cleanings. That's a lot of brewing. At the price offered when this review was posted, that's certainly less than a dollar per cleaning. Gotta like that.

This is the gold standard for cleaning homebrewing. This should be in every homebrewers inventory. Follow the instructions and don't skimp on the powder, let the powder do its job and clean/protect your equipment.

I was introduced to PBW when I was brewing actively; lots of partial to small full mash, small batch belgians. PBW made cleaning easy...fast forward to today and I use it mostly for clean in place (cip), with my hummingbird feeders. Zero to no scrubbing needed when used regularly. I often clean other household items with PBW as well, for example I have some shaver blades and foil soaking at this moment. There are decent instructions for use on the vessel, but you can find tons of advice on usage online (how does it react with SS, with vinyl tubing, etc). For brewing, I would cip tuns, fermenters and kegs overnight...for hummingbird feeders I cip for a few hours and rinse well with hot water. I also use extra long and thick cleaning gloves left over from my brewing days, but regular dish gloves are fine and you will want to use them. Without gloves, this stuff will leave your hands feeling slippery, due to it dissolving the oils and lipids...USE GLOVES!

Love this stuff. It works great for cleaning by beer making gear, and it really seems to clean it well. You may still have to run a brush on stuck on trub in a fermenting carboy or keg, but you don't have to scrub or anything, just let this stuff sit for 30 minutes and run the brush over the trub, and its clean. I can't imagine trying to clean without this stuff.

Buying in the larger jar has saved quite a bit on a product that I have used for years for cleaning homebrew equipment.
