This brush is totally worth the hype!
So I have long (a few inches past my bra) hair that is very thick, and due to several factors, also very fine. This is a nightmare combo for detangling - I have recently been using the "Wet" brand detangling hairbrushes, but it still feels like I am ripping through my hair. Rake combs just don't get in-between the fine hair enough to properly detangle. I'll add in here that my hair & skin are chronically dry, and I seem to always have this section of hair about 3/4 down that is unmanageable, regardless of my split ends. Adding in product helps with detangling, but weighs my hair down. I researched this brand a bit after several friends recommended, and yes, it's more expensive than any hairbrush I've bought, but the company has a solid reputation for quality and it's warrantied for life. I actually found a MP brush in my grandmother's cabinet from decades ago & it's in perfect shape, even after being through dozens of kids & grandkids. This detangling brush goes right through my hair, detangles everything without product, and feels amazing on the scalp (and I have a sensitive scalp that is not a fan of bristly brushes). It's also fantastic for getting all of my hair up in a ponytail or bun (I have other MP brushes now, but this one really grips and holds all of my hair up without having to use any pressure - I smooth with the popular mixture brush after pulling up the hair with this one). I don't blow dry my hair, but I do get a respectable amount of volume when I brush it after it's air-dried a bit as well. The brush is solidly built, appears legit compared to my other MP brushes. The packaging is attractive, they've clearly retained their older branding & it stands out nicely - I'll definitely keep the boxes for travel or storage (also, keep your packaging & receipt because they are lifetime warrantied & you may be asked for it if you request repair/replacement). It comes with a nylon cleaning brush which does seem to work effectively. There was some red residue on the brush from the packaging insert, but it wiped off easily. If you have oily hair, or don't want the natural bristles in the other MP brushes, this would be a great everyday brush. It is enjoyable to use and gets right through my hair without pulling or snagging, whether my hair is wet or dry. It feels solid in my hand and is a handsome brush to look at. My hair is noticeably smoother than even a few days ago with almost no product. I've used cushioned paddle-style brushes before & this definitely has a softer hold. If you do blow-dry your hair, I probably would also incorporate a vented, non-cushioned brush to avoid damaging the MP brush with product or direct heat - but I've also got less need to blow dry after using this one. Overall, I really love this brush. I will probably also buy this for my long & curly-haired niece since it is that gentle of a detangler. The cost is absolutely worth is (as are the more expensive natural-bristled MP brushes), and it's a very effective brush that should last for years. It will need to be properly cared for (it should not be submerged b/c of the vented cushion and exposure to lots of product or heat will degrade the bristles & bed), but that's been the case with any high-quality beauty product. I've since bought other MP brushes & combs and have been similarly impressed.

Terrific boar hair brush combo worth the price for me
I have had the mason pearson brush for about 2 years now and I absolutely love the mix of boar and nylon in the brush! It holds onto my fine-medium hair beautifully and pulls down any scalp oil at my crown into my ends. I use this on day 1-3 hair only. If I can make it to day 3-4 hair or i use scalp oil I use an inexpesnive boar only brush. The mason pearson brush has rubber on the base that can detiorate over time with xposure to some oils and products. I do baby this brush. I clean it out of any hair every use. I sue the brush cleaning tool about 1x a week and I give the brush a full water and mild soap cleaning 1x every 2 months- being very veyr carful not to get any water into the hole and then letting the brush dry fully. Yes this brush is expensive. Is it worth it? Yes, for me it is worth it. I lose much less hair now with regular use and my har is absolutely looking and feeling more healthy over these 2 years. This feels so good on my scalp and it really pulls down the oils into my medium-long hair mids and ends.

Worth every penny. Seriously.
I love this brush. I have very thick, long hair. It is ALWAYS tangled, wet or dry. Before this brush, I just could not keep up with it. Combing my hair was always a painful and time consuming ordeal. With this brush however, my hair is painlessly untangled very quickly. I was hesitant about combing out my wet hair, thinking that like everything else I've tried, it wouldn't work. But it did. Amazingly. What used to take 15 minutes (and a bucket of tears sometimes), now takes less than two and is a downright PLEASURE. I brush my hair twice a day, every day now and I've noticed an improvement in the look and feel of my hair. I was really hurting with the cost, but when you have hair like this, it is practically a necessity. I would've paid that much just to use it once, that's how pleasant it was. My usually cost conscious mother, after watching my brush my hair said, "Where was this 20 years ago when I was having to fight to get a comb through your hair?" and made no comment about the cost. No more tears, no more yanking hair out of my head just to get through a nasty knot. My hair is healthier because I no longer have to fight it, and I am so much happier. 3 MONTH UPDATE: I still LOVE this brush. I had gotten my hair cut right after getting this brush and it has kept my hair healthy and soft and has really stretched the effects of a new hair cut. 8 MONTH UPDATE: Still in love. Still use it every day. I carry it in my purse even! It's really durable too- I literally toss it in my purse without any protection and the only thing I've noticed is that the gold label is starting to wear off slowly. I've noticed that it traps lint in between the bristles sometimes, but nothing that can't be solved by running the included cleaning brush through it a couple times. It's still as amazing and wonderful as the day I bought it! I never review items, much less update my reviews, but $160 is A LOT to spend on a plastic hairbrush so I want everyone to know it is worth it.

How could I live without these brushes
I have fine hair. It really knows how to tangle. I've bee using these brushes for, I don't know, 45 years. They totally detangle, they survive blow drying. I've never had to follow the instructions for cleaning, although you certainly could. I simply pull the extra hair out of the brush, either by just grabbing and pulling or by running a rat-tail spindle or a pencil or any slender object just above the cushion and pulling off any extra hair. Then I just tap the bristles on the counter and bingo! Done. Occasionally - and I do mean occasionally - some hair winds around the handle of the brush and a pair of scissors eliminates the problem with a snip and a pull. I have a small variation for my purse but I have full-sized, white-based versions in both of the bathrooms I use. And these brushes last for well over a decade, closer to 20 years with regular use. In all the time I've had these I've only had one brush that had ANY deterioration and it lost a few bristles on the end but is still usable. No damage to the cushion at all or to the wonderful handle and base. I keep the one missing a few bristles in my suitcase in case I forget to pack one of the ones in my bathrooms. Mason Pearson also makes a version that has actual bristle as well as this plastic fiber bristle. I have found that for truly fine hair this white, plastic bristle brush is the better choice. I blow dry with it with no problems. You can't twirl it really, but it holds hair well as you dry it and you can usually get a very similar effect of turning the ends. Yes, it costs more but it will outlast and outperform an easy dozen other brushes. It has turned what was once regular warfare to a simple, basic and effortless task with no yanking, pulling and screaming.

An investment. I’ll use it until I die!
I have purchased three of these: one for me, One for travel, one for a teen granddaughter. We call these “the magic hair brush”. This is gentle on 70 year old head of hair and somehow seems to add volume while massaging my scalp. Clean as instructed. Do not use on wet hair.

Best Brush Ever!!!
These are the best brushes I have ever used! They last forever, you can will them to your grandchildren when you’re gone. The best quality brush you will ever buy. My mother used them, I didn’t think they were fancy enough for me. When I finally had two dollars to rub together, I bought mine and have never regretted it. If you want to take good care of your hair, this is how you do it.

Agree with everyone else
It’s the best. It’s worth every penny. I lost mine and came to replace it here. It’s more expensive than it used to be but it’s the same quality as I always remember. No pulling, gets through the most tangly hair ever and does not hurt. I missed my brush when it went missing, so much so that I even bought a similar looking white brush on here but it just yanked my hair out and broke my strands. This investment is worth it. Since purchasing my replacement, I found my missing brush. I’m happy to have multiple brushes now because they’re that good and I never want to be without again. It sounds dramatic, but the reviews raving about this are true. So very true. A lot of people say to just buy it. Yes, it’s expensive. But once you get it; you’ll understand.

Black hair review - Updated review after a year of ownership - changed rating from 4 to 2
. . . but at first I thought it was a complete waste of money. What made the difference? The relaxer! I was natural when I bought it and was having a very difficult time detangling so I thought I'd make an investment in a high-end hairbrush specially made for detangling. But it didn't really help at all. I cleaned it and put it away expecting I'd think of someone with thick or curly (non-black) hair to give it to. But I eventually got a relaxer, which helped with the horrible issues I'd been having with detangling. Of course, my hair still tangled (because it's quite wavy/curly), just not as badly, but still a chore. But eventually I remembered my expensive little white MP brush. I love it now! It helps me a lot. I do not use it as directed (it is not supposed to be used with product because certain ingredients aren't good for the rubber) but I need to brush through with product and it's also great for making sure hair evenly coated with treatments. Anyway, I finger de-tangle, then big tooth comb de-tangle, then the MP detangling brush brings it home. The result? Truly detangled, un-knotted hair. Hair that when you detangle, braid, rise or wash and then unbraid, is STILL detangled! That means fewer single strand knots for me, and just really pleased. Because it's expensive I would encourage people with black or other ethnic hair to try to get where you can try and maybe return or something (if it doesn't do the trick on your particular head of hair). Don't bother trying to dry brush using this if you have black hair (in my experience at least). No 5 rating just because I wish it was a bit bigger and wish it was not so high-maintenance to clean, etc, but it's still a winner for me. Thanks. *******UPDATE******It's been about 6 months of using this brush and I just tossed it. The bristles have bent and are falling out. To be fair, the instructions say that it is not for use in hair that has product in it because oils and the like damage the nylon. So that means if you brush through with your leave-in product or whatever, as I have, it isn't the intended use. I will not be replacing it because it doesn't do a special job on my hair dry. It just doesn't last for the use I found for it . . .

MAKES YOUR HAIR SO SOFT
I see what every one was saying and completely agree. You get what you pay for and it's very true. I have long hair and it can get frizzy but this brush has seemed to help with the frizz. I love that I can use this brush on my wet hair and dry. It has replaced my Wet brushes and I won't be going back to them. I would love to buy the big one in this one day. Good product and came very fast!
