Outlaw Star: Complete Collection

First of all, I have to warn potential buyers of the new and used sales for this product. Those that state that the collection has different cover art or a different case are selling you a bootleg. Your bootleg could be either a very poor quality foreign sub (tend to have horrible grammar, poor image resolution, and no extras) or what is called an American Rerelease. "American Rereleases" are just bootlegged copies of the real release that have been packaged in bulk quality cases with zeroxed inserts for the cover art. While they are cheaper their sales do not benefit anyone but the bootlegger. The studio that produced and marketed the series is losing out, and buying from bootleggers taxes the legit studios by taking their profits. Profits that would later get put into bringing you new series.So please, think about it before buying from a reseller and make sure you're getting what you're paying for. Buying from bootleggers will not get you a quality product.With that being said, Outlaw star is the quintessential post apocalyptic space anime. Seriously. In this series you'll find an amazing cast of characters, a solid story line, and very nice animation that can still hold its own even when compared to more modern anime.What is so wonderful about these older shows is that they were being produced when the broad audience still loved the extreme anime style and was willing to accept rather far fetched concepts without needing to be told in careful layman's terms what it all meant. The result? A series with good pace, surprises, and lots of action. Not to mention a lovable cast that, while still staying true to their extreme natures and rather stereotypical character types, are full of human emotion and still suffer from some faults.This series does not disappoint. It's a lovely mix of actions, romance (and not that cheesy, gooey kind), and even surprises you with a few hilarious gags.Oddly enough, the DVD case for this set reads that it comes with three disks.... But Amazon is correct in listing that it has six. I'm not sure why the official, legit release would have such a strange error on the case but don't panic if you receive yours and notice the mistake.This release also includes the textless opening and ending, one huge plus for fans who like to watch things in their entirety.

Let me say this is one of my favorite shows of all time. Its a really great series and I recommend it to everyone that likes animes dealing with outer space and people that have the attitude that they will do whatever they want within the reasonable limit. Even though its an old school series and isn't as smooth looking as the newer ones, it holds its own. The setting of the story is in outter space and it has a kinda western feel to it. The plot of the series is based around a character called Gene Starwind. He has a kinda odd job business with his partner James(Jim) Hawking. There whole lives change when they meet an outlaw named Helda. Through her they meet Melfina. Melfina is a type bio-organic andriod that was made to interface with this ship that Helda leads the three to a one of a kind ship called the XGP which later Gene names the Outlaw Star. There are different types of factions in this series. They are the Outlaws, the Pirates, and the Federation, and a group of Taoists. But they are all after this thing called the Galactic Leyline. All the groups know of it but they don't know exactly what it is. So the series starts with the three characters: Gene, Jim, and Melfina looking for the Galactic Leyline. Along the way they meet up different and sometimes suprising characters and make a few allies. They have some pretty interesting adventures too. I can't say much more or I will give away the whole series. But i hope ya found this review at least helpful. Again I recommend that everyone should have this gem added to their collection.

First, the series - very reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop in its action scenes (and space-western motif). However, it is also very much a character piece. You aren't told very much about any of the characters over the course of the show, but they are still each interesting and unique in personality and interaction. It's just a really fun show to watch, and the one great mystery of the show is wrapped up at the end. It is also more fantasy-based, incorporating magical elements with advanced technology. Compulsively watchable, interesting characters and lots of action!Secondly, this box set - for how old the show is, the quality (both video and audio) is quite good. This is also one of the few animes with a decent English dub that won't make you cringe, but you do have the option of watching with the original Japanese voice actors (and subtitles). The way the discs are divided up is kind of weird: instead of being labelled 1-6, they are separated into three sets of two: Set 1, Disc 1; Set 1, Disc 2; Set 2, Disc 2; etc. It's strange but all of the eps are there and in order, so it's not a problem, just a strange numbering convention. While the box itself isn't one of those newfangled slimpacks, all of the content you want is there - considering how long its been since the series aired and was dubbed, you really can't complain.

I first watched Outlaw Star almost 10 years ago, back when Sky TV had a little-known kids channel named Toonami. I've watched it many times since, and Lord knows I'll watch it many times again. It's bloody genius. It makes me laugh, cry, and adore the characters every single time around. I honestly don't know how so few anime fans have heard of it, but it hurts my otaku heart that such an absolute gem is so underrated.Space won't know what hit it when a rag-tag bunch of misfits including the lecherous, hard-drinking outlaw Gene Starwind and his long-suffering little mechanic pal Jim, a fierce female samurai named Suzuka, and a disgraced officer from a race of cat-like aliens named Aisha are forced together as a mysterious briefcase containing a beautiful young woman named Melfina, and a spaceship with a mysterious connection to her, The Outlaw Star, falls into their hands.Like its big brother Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star balances an episodic format with a deeper overarching plot; the episodes waver between the crew searching for answers about who or what Melfina really is, and the various misadventures they get into along the path to finding out. The writers know when to tickle you and when to play it serious, and Outlaw Star is filled with both drama and humour and never fails to deliver either. It has some incredibly poignant moments presented so memorably and beautifully they will stay with you forever...and it also has 'Hot Springs Planet Tenrei'. When I first saw that episode I think it was the hardest I'd laughed, ever. It rivals Full Metal Panic Fumoffu for exactly how much side-splitting slapstick you can pack into 23 minutes.This is a show of the rare variety where even the supporting characters are well-developed and incredibly fun to either love or hate; the ones who stick in my mind the most are the downright terrifying Mcdougal Brothers, and of course the poor, lovable, heartsick Fred, who loans the crew money and help many a time and sports a massive crush on Gene...much to the very heterosexual Gene's abject terror.I recommend Outlaw Star to anyone who likes their action served with a healthy dose of humour and pathos. The animation looks a little dated by today's standards but is still excellent, the dub is note-perfect for every single character, and the music is a real cracker. If you enjoyed the aforementioned Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Getbackers, you will feel right at home on the Outlaw Star alongside Gene, Jim and the others. Enjoy the ride.

O.k now this is one of my favourite anime series. I discovered it years ago on Cartoon Network when it was shown about 2am in the morning. Now this series was shown on a complete series loop for about 3 years and I never missed an episode in all that time, so I must have watched the series at least 10x+. Now the reason I'm writing this review is to warn people about the last 10 or so episodes so that you are prepared. The series ran out of money towards the end so the quality of the actual anime starts to make a dramatic nosedive. I mean to such an extent it is quite jarring at times. Now this does not change the fact of the excellent storyline, well I think it is excellent, but may throw some people off. My wife got very confused as she has seen me watch it on the boxset and thought I was watching a different anime as the drawing style changed so much. So don't think you've gone nuts when it happens as it really does change.Just a heads up.

If you are looking for something similar to Cowboy BeBop, then this is not it. However, it is still a lot of fun. The characters are very typical of standard anime tropes, however. You have a feisty female, a mysterious assassin, and a charismatic, promiscuous male protagonist who gets into a lot of trouble. This is probably the only negative about this series though. The episodic format with an overarching main plot makes it very easy to watch, while rewarding those who watch the entire series. The script is funny and witty, and the art is well done. And let's face it, Space Pirates and renegades are always fun. However, be prepared for cheese.

how long i have waited to have this on dvd and now i do, it comes with both english and original japanese dub with subtitles, an anime fan must have!
