These delicate-looking gouges allow you to carve details like no other tool. Their unique shape also makes them surprisingly versatile. Unlike most gouges, which feature a short round or square section close to the handle (called the shaft) before assuming the sweep of the gouge, fishtail gouges have a longer shaft that only flares out to the sweep and size of the gouge near the end. These are great carving chisels
I'm just beginning my wood carving journey so I thought I'd take a chance on the Schaf chisel sets. I'm really glad I did. These are great tools! They come sharpened and ready to use although I think they could use a little bit of tuning to make them a bit sharper. If you are looking for a great value in some quality tools then order Schaf Tools. Thank you Schaf!

Excellent quality
Very nice carving tools for a reasonable price. It is always a balance between quality and price with items like this, but I think these meet or exceed your expectations for the money.

Perform as well as much lower priced brands.
I bought the Schaaf Wood Carving Tools Complete Collection | The 12 Piece Foundation Set, 7 Piece Expansion Set, and 4 Piece Detail Set | 23 gouge Profiles Total to replace my aging and much cheaper Chinese wood carving chisels.Although I was not expecting top quality tools at this price, I was expecting better quality than the cheapos they were meant to replace. Regretfully, they seem to be of equal quality as chisels selling for half the price.Pros:• Once properly sharpened the tools carve as well as my old cheap Chinese chisels.• They are well balanced for mallet work or hand guiding.Cons:• The majority of chisels in these sets had visible burs that had to be ground off then sharpened and stropped.• None of the chisels were ready for carving out of the box. Two of the gouges wouldn't even slice soft pine smoothly out of the box.• After several hours of carving, I believe these tools need stropping more often than the old Chinese steel.Bottom line: These are OK tools that perform as well as much lower priced brands. Definitely not professional quality, but good for a beginner who wants "Made in America" more than value for money spent.

Great Tools at a Bargain Price
I bought the original twelve piece set of Schaaf tools about three years ago to add to my collection of "high-end" tools and found them to as good, or better than any I had, after initial sharpening. I was so impressed with them that I then purchased the smaller sets. I have used them on hard woods and basswood using hand pressure and mallets. All of the sets have different edge profiles (sweeps) or are different body shapes (long bends, spoon gouges, fishtails) making them some of the most useful profiles and shapes for most types of traditional carving. They really hold an edge well and I only wish the combined sets had been offered when I bought mine. I have been so impressed with the brand (tools and service) that I have added several more sets to my collection. Check out what the Pros have to say about them on YouTube.
