As Peanuts reaches the mid-1980s, a period of Peanuts that is far less well known than the endlessly collected 1960s and 1970s eras, Snoopy's deadpan, droopy-mustached brother Spike takes center stage. In romantic news, the Peppermint Patty-Marcie-Charlie Brown love triangle of overlapping unrequited love heats up (well, kind of), while Linus continues to vociferously deny that he is Sally's "Sweet Babboo"; of course, Lucy's unsuccessful pursuit of Schroeder remains unabated. In what is probably his most baroque and hilarious baseball-involved humiliation yet, Charlie Brown agrees to join Peppermint Patty's team the "Pelicans" only to discover that he's wanted not as a player but as a mascot. Linus gives up his security blanket and forms a support group for other kids who are trying to do the same, and Peppermint Patty manages to be held back in school and go on a European trip with her dad, sending back periodic dispatches from the road: all this plus appearances from Franklin, Rerun, and the rest of the gang. Review: Interesting stories - Awesome comics Review: Still worthy of your time to read and enjoy. - The Complete Peanuts, 1983-1984 (Vol. 17) is another installment on what will be the complete republication of all of the Peanuts comic panels. On the one hand it seems hard to believe we're already to volume 17 and yet there seems so much more to go. The 1983-1984 edition continues some of the more established storylines. Snoopy and his World War I flying ace, Charlie Browns continuing search of a Valentines card, Lucy's love affair Schroeder, Snoopy's brother Spike's adventures in the desert, as well as the Great Pumpkin and more are included. Also, some interesting new elements. Peppermint Patti's dismal progress in school results in failure to be promoted in school. During the summer she tour's Europe with her father. Spike's infatuation with a girl in a red pickup truck is also launched in this volume. I did notice that Charlie Brown avoids Lucy's trick of pulling the football away at the last minute which shows some real growth for this character. For confirmed Peanuts fans there is much here to read and cherish. Again, I found myself thinking back to memories for these two years. In this case, the birth of my youngest daughter on July 18, 1983 as I read the panel for that day. Other memories surfaced as well. I highly recommend The Complete Peanuts, 1983-1984.

More Joy from Charles Schulz
We're now getting into the period of Peanuts that I can remember reading in the paper when I was growing up. Some of the themes are old ones for the strip, but they hold up well, and spoke especially strongly to a reader coming to them for the first time. In rereading these strips, I noticed that Peppermint Patty figures rather strongly during this period. Though I never struggled as a student myself, her D-minuses and being held back in school must have spoken strongly to those of us working through those pressure-packed years. And you can't miss the joys of Snoopy, Spike, and Woodstock in these pages either. Any reader of my reviews knows how much I love Peanuts. There's certainly nothing to disappoint here.

The Complete Peanuts Collection from Amazon
I have purchased three copies of each volume of The Complete Peanuts collection. Each time a new book is issued, my son and two son-in-laws receive them as Christmas gifts. They are always thrilled to get the additional books and will be able to complete the collection some day. My son-in-law and daughter have three children. Whenever Peter receives a new Charlie Brown edition, he reads it to the children in the evenings. This keeps Charlie Brown alive to the next generation! I started each collection with the issue of Volume1, have Volume 17 in triplicate already, and will soon pre-order Volume 18.

Not just for collectors
Having lost touch with Peanuts around the early 80's I am reading most off these for the first time. Until now I had it in my mind that Schultz had gone off the boil around this time. Definitely not the case, it may have changed and had certainly evolved but it is still as sharp and funny as ever. I guess most of the people buying these collections are already solid fans faithfully collecting each new book every six months for the last 9 years or so but each book is a delight in it's own right so if you just fancy a peanuts book or know someone who would then go for it. I would also recommend the book Charles M. Schulz: Conversations (Conversations with Comic Artists) as well primarly for the last interview with Gary Groth who manages to get at least a little way past the protective fence Schultz stands behind in most of his interviews.

Altamente consigliato!
