Just What I Wanted!
I'm a watch collector and I wanted something different, so I decided to get a Vostok. I lived in Russia for a couple of years and had always heard they were great watches for the money (though they're far cheaper to purchase in Moscow than here on Amazon). I wasn't expecting much for the Soviet era concept of quality, but you can usually find a decent watch in that price range on the street in Moscow and there's typically a lot of 'bang for the buck is these. However, the Vostok Russian Tank Automatic proved to be a mixed bag of good and bad. I'll start off on a positive note:The Good1. The Movement. It's Automatic, reasonably reliable and very quiet. The sweep of the second hand is very fluid. Everything that you can reasonably expect in a Vostok.2. The dial face is clean and lines up well with the hands, the lume is also good. The tank and star artwork is really what I was looking for in a Vostok. -Very original and distinctive. The date function is very good; easy to read in comparison to many of the newer watches that possess microscopic date windows for which you require a magnifying glass. I have no trouble seeing the date as long as I'm not in a low-light setting.3. The band has lots of adjustability, and that's a plus for a fussy guy like me. I like my bands to be snug as it really drives me nuts if the watch band is too tight or loose.Note that the bezel rotates in both directions, but as you can see in the pictures, there are no numbers on the bezel, so that's something to think about if you're a diver or otherwise require a working bezel. But for the other 99.9 percent of us, this is not an issue. You may also note that the bezel is easy to rotate, which could be aggravating if you want to use the bezel. A good bump could easily throw it out of the position you've set it to. Again, not a biggie for me.The Bad.1. The band is a bit on the narrow side, and feels cheap. There is a prominent side-to-side sway in the links that is probably akin to that on a $5 watch you can find on a Moscow street-corner swap meet than a quality watch. The clasp is standard fare and does the job.2. This thing has the general feel of a T-34 Tank, so the artwork is entirely appropriate. No, it's not sapphire glass and is made of the same steel that you can find on a myriad of other watches but it's solid and could easily see duty in demanding work environments. That said, it's mineral glass and could get scratched if you accidentally bump it against a brick wall or such. The band seems chintzy to me, and I don't get the feeling that it will hold up in the long haul. All in all, this is an OK watch for the price. The 31-jewel movement seems accurate and reliable, and adequate for an automatic in this price range (if you can even find another automatic in this price range). If you're looking for the value of this watch, it's in this movement. As long as you know what you're getting into, you will be satisfied with this watch. But let's face it, this has the general look and feel of a watch designed and built in 1965...in a Gulag... If that's what you're looking for, I say go for it. But if you're going to nit-pick, and compare against a modern quartz Armitron, Casio or Bulova, of which you could easily find by the bucket-load in this price range, then you may not be very happy. For me, I was looking for the throwback quality and feel so this was right up my alley. If you’re looking for a reminder of why the Soviet Union collapsed, buy a Vostok. In the company's heyday of the 1960s and '70s, a Vostok was probably the best watch you could get inside the Soviet Union, but that’s not saying much. Apples to apples? I'd never buy this over a quality western watch if I needed an accurate and reliable timekeeper. For that, get a Seiko, or one of the myriad of watches running modern Japanese and Swiss movements. But if you're looking for that throwback to the Soviet look and feel, and don't need a hyper-accurate daily wearer, this is a keeper.
