Star of Light

Review from a 13 year old boy
Star of Light is a story of a boy who needs to use the only thing he's got, courage.Hammid has a step father because his father and 3 siblings died, that's the way it is in Morocco.Hammid's little blind sister Kinza is also struggling. At 3 years old she is about to be sold to a beggar by her cruel step father. Will Hamid have enough courage to take his sister to safety? Or will his step father sell his little sister to the blind beggar? If Hammid is brave enough to take the journey it won't be easy for there is always something around the next corner. The plot wasn’t very predictable, I couldn’t know what was going to happen without reading it. The characters were believable. It takes place in Morocco, first in a village and later on in a city. I think the book has a theme about having a meaning for your life. I think it is a great book with a good moral and cliff hangers. I suggest that if you are reading this, you read Star of light.

"Star of Light" by Patricia St.John,It is a fascinating true Story about a moroccan boy and his sister.
This book was the first one I read, written by Patricia St.John and I was absolutely spell-bound by it. Later I used it with children of 2-14 years old, one chapter a week and the tension to learn how it continued was sometimes so great, that they wanted me to carry on to the next chapter. They listened in dead-silence. Patricia became later my personal friend and colleague right until she died. I once asked her, if this and other stories from her books were real stories or just invented ones. She reassured me that all the books she has written were inspired and based on real events. I believed her and her books became even more precious to me and to my children, grand-children and friends old and young alike. Age-range from 2-99 years old.

A must read
One of the best children's story ever written. Amazing characters with emotions children will identify with. She understands children so well and makes biblical truths so simple even an adult can understand.

Outstanding book for the whole family
Patricia St. John was an excellent writer of children's books. Her works are set in a variety of times and settings, include the classical world, contemporary (to her life-time) England, the Swiss Alps, to name a few. Whatever the setting, her stories always involve well-drawn characters dealing with realistic and personal conflicts. Their struggles teach them that in order to triumph over adversity, they usually must first deal with their own inner foes, such as pride, anger, selfishness, and bitterness. The difficulty, even hopelessness of life's inner and outer struggles, reveals the need for the magnificent and boundless resources of a loving God. Unlike many other writers of religious fiction, her characters have depth and personality and her plots are creative, rather than derivative and predictable. The Star of Light is set in an unnamed North African country, probably Morocco, in the 20th century. The story follows the efforts of Hamid, a boy from a poor rural family, to save his little blind sister Kinza from the selfish plans of their cruel stepfather. Hamid runs away with Kinza to bring her to a unusual missionary nurse that his mother had a special encounter with some years prior. The book relates how the lives of Hamid, Kinza, the English nurse Rosemary, and Rosemary's visiting relatives all intersect in a most dramatic and compelling fashion.St. John writes of this North African setting in a very knowledgeable and compassionate manner; clearly, she had firsthand knowledge of the culture. The character of the nurse Rosemary seems drawn from real life experience. This is a great book for adults and children to learn about North African culture and a unique version of the missionary calling. I highly recommend it.I have questions for anyone more familiar with Patricia St. John. This edition and others we have bought have been revised. Does anyone know whether one can find the original versions of her writings and whether these modern revisions have been extensive?
