A beautiful 60th anniversary special edition of the first George Smiley novel, now with a new introduction by John le Carrรฉ After a routine security check by George Smiley, civil servant Samuel Fennan apparently kills himself. When Smiley finds Circus head Maston is trying to blame him for the man's death, he begins his own investigation, meeting with Fennan's widow to find out what could have led him to such desperation. But on the very day that Smiley is ordered off the enquiry he receives an urgent letter from the dead man. Do the East Germans - and their agents - know more about this man's death than the Circus previously imagined? Le Carrรฉ's debut novel, Call for the Dead , introduced the tenacious and retiring George Smiley in a gripping tale of espionage and deceit. 'The greatest spy novelist of all time' Jake Kerridge, Daily Telegraph Review: An author worthy of your time. - Excellent book. I'm on a binge of all things Le Carre at the moment - books, films and TV. Shame the book, a new hardcover, looks like it has been used as a frisbee at some point. Sign of the times. Review: Somebody is watching you . - A great book .

Where it all started
With the release of Karla's Choice, Iโve decided to revisit the early Smiley novels, starting right at the beginning with this first book. This story lays the groundwork for everything that follows, including the origins of the East German double agent who becomes central in The Spy Who Came in from the Coldโthough his significance isnโt immediately clear in this initial installment. It also offers insight into George Smileyโs background, including his activities before World War II. Although itโs a short and early novel, it stands as a compelling whodunnit wrapped in a spy narrative. The mystery elementsโlike the clever 8:30 phone callโare classic hallmarks of the genre and add an extra layer of intrigue. Iโm giving it four starsโnot because itโs lacking, but because John le Carrรฉ has written even stronger works that truly earn five. That said, Iโll definitely be reading this one again.

Like an old friend.
I had only ever listened to the radio plays and watched the smiley TV and films. The book is easy to pick up and establishes the characters and plot very early on. Quite a short book but one I will re read.

A must for Le Carre fans.
Without wanting to give any spoilers this book puts future Le Carre spy novels in context. Good quality book, well made.

What was expected from Le Carre. One of the earlier books. You can see him evolving. Great.
