Use hardwood, easy on the charcoal-
For those who say it over temps, I say use less charcoal, hardwood is easier to control heat in a ceramic grill. Easy to program, controls well.

Unbelievable control of pit temp.
Bought the controller about 8 months ago. Unbelievable how it controls my pit temp within 4 deg. Many extra features such as turning the fan off at a predetermined MEAT temperature so the meat will not be overlooked. Simple to program if you follow the instructions. I had a problem one time with the device not displaying the pit temperature at all but called the help number, a real person answered after 2 rings and was immediately able to talk me through the fix. Turns out that it only needed to be reset. I highly recommend this controller. I'm buying another one for another BGE.

I purchased this for my Brinkman smoker knowing that it was for the Big Green Egg but hoping to retrofit it and I must say it works great. The hardest part is figuring out how much charcoal to use but after that it works great!!!

You need the full manual on parameter setting for this to be tuned to your smoker. Fan speed and probe calibration etc...

This works great once you learn how to use it
This works great once you learn how to use it. There is a bit of a learning curve. You still have to adjust the exhaust flue to about the right spot otherwise this wouldn't work. Once you get the hang of it, it's a great product. I'd recommend it.

that cannot easily be brought back under control
I have used this controller a few times since purchase. The programming is simple enough if you are using it as it comes set-up. I am in need of more control on the PID loop and finding information about programing the variables is hard to come by. I was able to turn the fan capacity way down (10% power), because when using this with my BGE, the power of the fan caused a huge overshoot in temperature, that cannot easily be brought back under control. Overall, it is a good product. I wish it was at least weather resistant for use on my outdoor smokers. Because it is not, I am looking to mount it in a waterproof electrical box on my smoker.
