would this work with m and p shield ? not the plus. only difference holds less rounds.

The shield and shield plus has magazines of different thickness. This is a simple design likely built with 3D printer. Doesn’t work for me, Too late to return but I wouldn’t waste my money spend a little more and get one that works with a number of mags!

Does it work on 40 ammo?

No, our Shield Plus magazine loader is designed specifically for the 9mm Shield Plus so I do not think that it will fit the .40
