easy to program, good audio
Great little radio. Chirp booted right up and less than 30 seconds I had a code plug in the radio, audio is nice thru the supplied microphone. I've seen good and bad reviews, seems there's good units and some duds. Hoping mine lasts, no issues so far. Waiting on a few more parts before I do a remote head unit install. I owned a 9800 years ago and I really liked it, it preformed very well.

Works great but difficult to program.
This radio works great and is very powerful. However, to program, I had to go to the TH website and download the software for the 7800. There is no software for this specific model. It even comes with a mini-CD (I don't even have a laptop with a CD drive any longer). Even with the software, you still have to know many of the details for the programming to work. It doesn't automatically know the offsets with + and - as well as if you enter a tone, you still have to tell it to use the tone. But after I figured that out, It's great.

Do not buy unless you want to MANUALLY program radio!
This is an ok radio for the money. The issue lies in the programming. This radio will NOT program with the radio's programming software OR CHIRP, if you have a Windows 10 or 11 computer. It will not read or write to the radio. Beware. Manual programming is a pain to do, but does work.

Great radio, Not Unlocked
I purchased this radio January 3, 2022. I programmed with Chirp with no difficulty. I've used this radio with no issues on the ham and simplex frequencies and it has performed well. The issue I have now I realized the radio is locked when trying to use on GMRS. I have audio but cannot transmit which is an issue since my jeep friends have GMRS radios. I have downloaded the TYT software and tried to connect to the radio. The challenge is that the drivers in the programing cable does not support windows 11. So I literally cannot access the radio. I have reached out to TYT and an waiting on a response. Fingers crossed!

UNLOCK TH-7900
Love the radio, the Yaesu counterpart is limited to the extent of frequencies someone can use on both TX an RX.So I'm tired to see misinformation in the Q&A section above of people saying " you can't unlock it, it's illegal, the FCC..... gne gne gne gne gne " ( rubbing fake tears on eyes with your fists clenching kind of noise).here it is, thank me laterThis user tips uses TH-9800 as an example.*The unlock method of TH-7900 is the same as TH-9800, and the password also the same)Step1: Please download the software and driver :https://tyt888.s3.amazonaws.com/TH-7800.rarhttps://tyt888.s3.amazonaws.com/TH-9800.rar*Please select the TH-9800 and TH-7900 software that we recommend.Step2: we recommend use the WIN 7 computer to install it. *it support WIN 7/10, NOT SUPPORT MACWe start to unlock the frequency now.1. Press the “Edit” and select the “Frequency range”2. Press the “Ctrl” key+”F11” key simultaneously, then it will require you input the password (as picture).3. Input the password “9800TYT” to complete the unlock.4. Program your frequency at the range of 136-174MHz/400-480MHz.

Need the comm port drivers
Great Radio I like it. It’s difficult to program.I’d really appreciate it if I could get the comm port drivers so I can actually program the radio with my computer.

Edit: returned, buggy
Update: Returning this radio. The quirks and bugs are too much, and I have concerns about running it on high power for too long. For the money, I just can't overlook this any longer. Hyper buttons freeze the radio. Browsing memories to save one is messed up. Naming channels is messed up. Lock toggle on the handheld mic doesn't do anything... Spend a few more dollars and get something else.Works. The unit was smaller than I expected, which I'm happy for. Programmed with CHIRP. Only trouble I had is that attempting to use the hyper memory functions locks up the entire radio. Not sure what's going on there. I just won't touch those buttons, I reckon. You can also hear a white noise when a signal is coming in, but you have the volume turned down. Maybe that's a feature? After installing the unit under the seat, however, I can't hear it, so no big deal.Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. Signal reports are good. Transmit audio sounds good on the other end.Cross band repeat is two way only as far as I can tell. It would be nice to have a one way, or half duplex, repeater capability. Worried about burning out the radio otherwise.

Dual band radio
The radio works well, easy to program but audio reports are basic and are not fantastic some saying it sounds a bit muffled. For the price and power level decent buy.
