Quit Calling Me a Monster!

Jory John is always fabulous so I am not surprised my daughter and I loved this book. It is particularly wonderful when a book is exciting and funny and yet effortlessly packs an important message. Naming the "monster" in this book Floyd Peterson is a stroke of genius and one that really reinforces the whole point. Floyd looks different, scary even, causing people to stare at him, point at him, and call him a monster. He just wants to be Floyd Peterson and once people see him as Floyd Peterson instead of just seeing a monster we have our happy ending.Daddy, I think there is a monster in my closet. No, son, it's just Floyd Peterson.Oh...okay. Good night.Perfect tale!

With all the concern currently about stereotypes and all that happens to perpetuate them, it's refreshing to see a take on the subject that is so very enjoyable. Floyd Peterson is very clearly a monster (even he admits it at one point in the story, although very reluctantly). He looks like a monster, he sometimes behaves like a monster, although he claims that that is inadvertent. But despite it all, he does not like being called a monster. In a hilarious narrative, Floyd explains that he doesn't like people being scared of him (even though he does sleep in closets and under beds) and seriously prefers to be called Floyd Peterson. It's difficult though to look at this purple-furred, glow-in-the-dark sharp smiled, horned creature and call him Floyd Peterson. One of the funniest parts is when Floyd compares his sleeping habits to a child who is snoring and green-faced. The children I read this too just busted up in giggles. And the end, well, let's just say the ending is as perfect an ending as I've ever seen. A truly delightful book that in an unobtrusive way lets readers know that it's important to respect others wishes in what they are called and how they are seen and treated. This book is a real treat from start to finish.

I have two daughters and my youngest child is a boy. He is four and I have been seriously annoyed with the difficulty of finding clever or interesting books for boys. This one is just fun and clever. It makes my son laugh which is just heartwarming. If your child is already freaked out by the idea of monsters, skiddish, or sensitive, this book may not help . My son, who is scared of the dark, wasn't upset by this one bit and requests this book. It's just fun and the end is cute.

I ordered this book for my three year old nephew after reading it on my job as a nanny. I LOVE the book. It’s hilarious and the storyline is basically “don’t judge a book by its cover” theme. However, my nephew didn’t love the book. In fact, he was afraid of even looking at the cover and asked his parents not to read it to him. If your child is easily creeped out by “scary” monsters, then avoid wasting your money on this otherwise very cute book.

This is the cutest story for young kids.. Very entertaining for the adults too to read to the child. So glad I got it for grandmas house !!!!!

Granddaughter who us is 4 yrs. old very much enjoys this book.....We have read it to her several times and now she knows it so well.....she reads(?) it out loud herself to me.....

Cute, but my boys (ages 2 and 4) didn't really love it. Something probably for kids a bit older. I'll probably put up for a while and take it out when they would enjoy it better.

Another cute book by Jory John. My 3yr old loves it. He was a little put off at first reading because the monster can be scary. But after reading it a couple of times he actually started feeling sorry for the poor little guy. Now he really loves the book. Great illustrations.
