Gridman: The Hyper Agent

The main reason I got this series was because I'm a big fan of the SSSS.Gridman anime and have plans to watch its sequel, SSSS.Dynazenon in the near future. Since I had read that the latter anime series references this original live-action series a little more heavily, I thought I should give it a look so I'd be properly prepared.As far as this series itself is concerned, it turned out to be a lot better than I had expected. Basically it's a cross between Ultraman and TRON. It's not great art, but it's entertaining for what it is. Let's not kid ourselves, this is a children's show. The main villain is an otherworldly entity bent on the two-dimensional goal of world domination and committing other various evil deeds. Each episode pretty much follows the same formula:1.) Bad guy sends a kaiju into a computer via what we now know as the Internet to wreak havoc and cause some form of disaster or mischief in the real world.2.) Hero flies into the computer in question to beat the monster and restore order, showing off some new weapon or power-up as the series progresses.Very often a lot of the episodes also involve the protagonists learning some sort of lesson like, "don't litter", or "value your siblings" or "money isn't everything". Like I said though, it's still pretty entertaining for what it is. Most of the main characters are handled pretty well and a lot of the kaiju seen over the course of the series are actually kind of neat. Plus having already seen the SSSS.Gridman anime, I was surprised by how many little things from this series I had recognized; little props seen in the anime that I didn't know were references to things from this series.As far as this set of Blu-ray Discs is concerned, the price is definitely right. The picture quality is okay, though it's a standard definition picture so you get those black bars on the side of the screen. It can't really be helped though since this series came out in the mid 1990s. The only real issue though is with the subtitles. You can at least understand the dialogue, but it's not a high-quality translation. There's also the occasional typo and what could be considered a lack of consistency, but these things don't happen often enough to really be considered annoying. The other thing is the opening and ending theme songs were left without subtitles, and there is no English dub for those hoping for one.Despite the flaws with this show's Blu-ray release though, Gridman: The Hyper Agent is still a must for fans of the SSSS.Gridman anime or just fans of the Ultra Series.

Like many western live-action shows, it was inspired by ones from across the ocean. Remember watching Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad back in the 90s, well this is the Japanese series that inspired it. Ran across the series on various late-night/early-morning cable and later on certain streaming services. After catching more than a few shows, found myself looking to see if there was a complete series on DVD/Blu-Ray disc. Thankfully, I was able to track it down here and grab myself a copy that wasn't gonna break the bank. It's highly entertaining, and somewhat nostalgic in my opinion. However fair warning that the English subtitles are more than a little off at times, I don't have as much of problem with them as other reviewers seem to. I recommend it for anyone interested in classic Japanese shows.

To break this down as you've no doubt already read the subtitles used are sourced from the dubious streaming service TokuHD and as such are very, very flawed.The raw quality of those being about a step above crabsticks (bootleg) subtitles.Now the thing is they touched these subs up to various degrees. Episodes 1, 2, 3, and 21 for whatever reason got decently reworked (scrubbed in fansubbing terms) but the rest got slight grammatical tweaks or were left outright unchanged.The original TokuHD subs were basically translated from japanese to spanish, then machine translated from spanish into english.That being said the Gridman subs themselves were some of the least broken ones on that service, a moment of silence for the * ultraman and both kamen rider Agito and Faiz.On top of that, Gridman as a show is phenomenal. Of everything Millcreek has put out so far Gridman is absolutely one of the best from TsuPro's backlog and is now my favorite Tokusatsu show ever as it stands.I've got about 500 hours burned on these style of shows so I can pick out the "intent" of phrases compared to their subs boosting my personal watching experience, but for the random viewer only checking this out either because of having watched it's american adaptation or SSSS.Gridman that means you're stuck with subs going to the furthest extreme of phrases. Every annoyed exclamation is either "Jesus" or "Jesus Christ" instead of Jeez, Man, Woah ect. And every rude statement is just hard swearing, coming out of the younger sibling characters specifically. Especially in the piano episode.This release is the pits and a hard step down in quality from the otherwise top shelf releases millcreek has done so far.However Gridman is still outright an amazing show and if you're considering it just don't pay more then 20$.It'll get there eventually, the rest of the ultra series sets are right now and those are a steal for the prices those things go for.But the translation work is a genuine damper on an otherwise fantastic experience. The subs aged worse then the amiiga computer effects and the subs aren't even 5 years old yet!

小さかった頃の思い出が蘇りました。

数年前にアニメ化もされたグリッドマン。ウルトラマン80から暫くぶりの円谷ドラマで、名作ティガの1作前の作品です。ティガとダイナはDVDなのにコチラはブルーレイなのは何故？内容は平成ウルトラよりは若干 昭和よりって感じのストーリーでしょうか。現実世界ではなくＰＣの中の仮想空間で戦うのは予算等の事情もあったかもですが、新しい物を生み出そうという心意気と受け止めたいですね。キャストは子役さん中心という事もあって演技力がちょっと…です。今の時代なら達者な子役さんは大勢いますが当時は仕方なかったかな。アニメ見て興味を持ったという方が見たら 緩めの展開に絶句かも。海外のレビューの評価が目茶苦茶 低いのは英語字幕のクオリティがダメダメだからみたいです。日本人が日本語で視聴するには問題ナシです。ただ はっきり言って他の昭和ウルトラマンで未視聴の作品があるなら そっちが先でいいと思います。

電光超人グリッドマンは時代が早すぎた最高傑作です！今回とても安かったので購入致しましたが送られてきた品物はケース・ディスクともカビっぽくポツポツと白い斑点がありディスク面にも丸い傷の様な粘着物の様な物が付着し指紋もベタベタ。返品回収した物なのかな？一度綺麗にし再生しましたが状態が酷かった為か画像が飛ぶ等不良品だったので交換依頼のはずが返品の処理になってしまいました。なので再度購入しなおしました再購入品はちゃんとしていれば良いなと思います作品が好きなだけに残念でした。

国内のPS4、PS5で問題なく再生できました。字幕は英語字幕のみ。レビューの評価が低いのはどうやら英語字幕の翻訳のクオリティがあまり高くないからのようです。「とにかく全話手元に置いておきたいけど国内版のBOXが高すぎる」という方にはおすすめです。ただこれが海外クオリティなのかわかりませんが、紙製のスリーブは特に梱包されておらず、パッケージの小さな破れ、ディスクケースのプラスチックの白化など、荒い部分が目立ちます。本当に見たいだけの人向け。
