There is no upper left hand "button" to push to change the light or turn it off. Where did it go?

My unit does not have a button, it is always on, you cannot change the intensity of the light or turn it off.

How many slides can it hold at one time?

It only gives you 20 scanned slides with a free membership. You need to sign up and pay to have more slides scanned.

I already have a light box. How much is the software.?

There was no software purchase necessary to use this light pad. It’s simply just a light pad. If you’re asking about the apps to use for your pictures or negatives on the light pad, then yes, there are in-app purchases. I have used Photomyne, Film Box, Slide Scan and Remini. Each of these will give you a few freebies, but to effectively utilize the apps, you would need to make purchases. I hope this helps! Good luck!

How do you adjust the intensity of the light and turn the device off and on? there is no button anywhere and touch in various places has no effect.

There is a button that is flush with the frame in the upper left corner close to the power inlet. It’s a touch sensitive button. Not one you push.
