A sophisticated supernatural Hollywood comedy whose influence continues to be felt, Here Comes Mr. Jordan stars the eminently versatile Robert Montgomery (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) as a working-class boxer and amateur aviator whose plane crashes in a freak accident. He finds himself in heaven but is told, by a wry angel named Mr. Jordan (Casablanca s Claude Rains), that his death was a clerical error, and that he can return to earth by entering the body of a corrupt (and about-to-be-murdered) banker whose soul could use a transplant. Having inspired a sequel with Rita Hayworth and two remakes (the first starring Warren Beatty and the second Chris Rock), Alexander Hall s effervescent Here Comes Mr. Jordan is comic perfection.DVD SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES - New 2K digital restoration- New conversation between critic Michael Sragow and independent filmmaker Michael Schlesinger- Audio interview from 1991 in which actor Elizabeth Montgomery discusses her father, actor Robert Montgomery- Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of Here Comes Mr. Jordan from 1942 starring Cary Grant, Claude Rains, Evelyn Keyes, and James Gleason- Trailer- PLUS: An essay by critic Farran Smith Nehme

I like this movie good

A classic not to be missed.
This is the movie that Warren Beatty based "Heaven Can Wait' on. It has aged better than the Beatty film, and was 30 years earlier. You also get the criterion quality with this film.

Good Hollywood movie that all members in the family can comfortably watch and enjoy....
The seller delivered my movie quickly and uneventfully.... The story - like much of religion, itself - shows the nature of death and the nature of heaven in a way that is comforting to us mortal earthlings.... Unlike documentaries or mysteries or suspense dramas, this movie is a Hollywood feel-good ride.... While the story has evil doers, it does not focus on putting them in their place, but, the main character, Joe (played by Robert Montgomery), does seem to be a dangling- albeit, a lovable one, and - having been prematurely killed and cremated. Joe is guided - under the tutelage of Mr. Jordan (played by the debonair, Claude Rains) to select and fulfill another host person's life at the moment the other person is snuffed. Joe gets to realize his destiny to become boxing champion and even gets girl he swooned over during his false restart - even if he is made to forget who the heck he he started out as ... It is a light-hearted, fun Hollywood tear-jerker - none of the heaviness of "Meet Joe Black" (another good movie) ... Extras on the disc include an extensive interview with Robert Montgomery's daughter, Elizabeth.

A highly entertaining movie experience
Here Comes Mr. Jordan is a very entertaining and thought-provoking film with great performances by Robert Montgomery and Claude Rains. The premise of "coming back to life" in someone else's body was very interesting and different (and it seemed to be copied several times over the years). The storyline, dialogue, and acting are great; this one is worth a try.The transfer is very good, excellent picture and sound quality, and the extras are typical from Criterion. Subtitles are available if needed. The 1991 audio interview with Elizabeth Montgomery was really good. She speaks quite fondly and lovingly of her father without sugarcoating him, or making him "the greatest dad in the world." I thought she was quite honest about him. My favorite story she told about him was the prank he pulled on her the first time she ever saw one of his movies (which was the thriller Night Must Fall). She talks about what it was like growing up with him, about his career, and a little about hers as well--worth a listen! If you like this film, I also recommend its "inverse", the film Angel on My Shoulder, with Claude Rains and Paul Muni. Rains is just as wonderful a devil as he is an angel! Both come highly recommended!

HERE COMES MR. JORDAN! 50 YEARS TOO SOON!
The first thing you need to know about this movie is that it's a little confusing, so pay attention! Joe Pendleton (Robert Montgomery) is on his way to becoming the next heavyweight champion of the world. Flying back to New York from training camp in his small plane, he crashes. The next thing you know he's talking to Messenger 7013 (Edward Everett Horton), who keeps telling him he's dead. He's also taking him up to Heaven to see Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains), who's in charge of new arrivals. But there seems to have been a mistake. 7013 took him out of the plane before it crashed. Checking his records, Mr. Jordan discovers that Joe Pendleton isn't supposed to be there until 1991! Since the movie was made in 1941, that means he's got fifty years to go!Mr. Jordan orders 7013 to take him back and return him to his body, but now there's another problem. Max Corkle (James Gleason), Joe's manager, had him cremated. Now Mr. Jordan has to find him another body! (Are you getting all this?)Joe and Mr, Jordan travel the world looking for a body, but no luck! Back in New York, they stop at the home of banker Bruce Farnsworth. It seems that Farnsworth's wife Julia (Rita Johnson) is having an affair with his secretary Tony Abbott (John Emery). Naturally, they're going to murder him. How will they do it? "They're drowning him in the bathtub," Mr. Jordan explains quite nonchalantly.Farnsworth was involved in a phony stock deal and blamed his partner, the father of Betty Logan (Evelyn Keyes). With much persuasion, Mr. Jordan convinces Joe to be Farnsworth, just long enough to help Betty. At first she despises him, but when he gets her father out of prison, they begin to fall in love. Then our friend 7013 arrives with some distressing news. Joe can't use Farnsworth's body any more (it is never explained why). Tony Abbott decides to kill Farnsworth the old-fashioned way, with a gun. But there's nothing for Joe to worry about. "You and I will be searching again," Mr. Jordan tells him. After all, there's lots of bodies he can inhabit!Weeks go by, and Joe still hasn't found a suitable body. He and Mr. Jordan go back to Farnsworth's house, where Inspector Williams (Donald McBride) is grilling all the suspects in the Farnsworth murder case. Meanwhile Joe's shot at the championship has been given to K.O. Murdock. Murdock is winning the fight when all of a sudden he falls to the canvas. He's been shot, Mr. Jordan tells us, murdered by gamblers at ringside. But Joe can be Murdock! In Murdock's body, Joe finishes the fight and wins the championship! (You still getting all this?)Mr. Jordan tells Joe, "This is your road. From now on, you're K.O. Murdock. They'll be no more memory of Joseph Pendleton."Yet right after this Joe (K.O) has a scene with his manager, Max Corkle.Max: Who am I?KO: Don't you know?Max: I have my doubts.K.O. You're Corkle, Max Corkle.Max: And who are you?K.O: (annoyed) K.O. MURDOCK! What's the matter with this guy?Max: Do you know Joe Pendleton?K.O. Sure. Nice guy, killed in an airplane crash.Max: (sadly): Yeah. That's right. Now how could this conversation take place if K.O. had no more memory of Joe Pendleton? In the final scene, K.O. bumps into Betty and a brand new romance is about to begin.Even if confusing, "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" is quite an entertaining movie. James Gleason was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor award and he should have won it. He's great!

Classic for a reason
Great film. Redone many different times with multiple variations but this is the original and arguably the best. Classic film still holds up. Very enjoyable fantasy. Impeccable casting.

This is one of those old flix that rates SIX stars!
Chris Rock's "Down to Earth" is an updated mish-mash of:* HEAVEN CAN WAIT [both versions]* HERE COMES Mr. JORDAN. IF you believe in The After-Life, you'll love ALL of these classic-flix! Oh! Try DEFENDING YOUR LIFE AS WELL.Enough said.

Genuinely soulful -- a religious experience, or better, what religion should be.
Mr.Jordan is, and you can pick one, a top angel or God himself, which is the answer I prefer.A prizefighter is sent to Heaven before his time, and as a consequence is forced to occupy a new body on earth. Academy Awards for the original story and screenplay. Evelyn Keyes, never more beautiful, well maybe in Johnny O'Clock, with Robert Montgomery as the fighter, James Gleason his manager, and Claude Rains as the big boy himself. Love it. If you don't cry, or cheer, get checked out.
