The hits collection of Andrews sister 1937-55
What can you say about the Andrews sister music. You either enjoy listening to them or not. I do and this is a great collection of their music. I wished they had In the Mood in this collection. But they do have some Christmas songs on here which is quite nice.

AVOID - AT ALL COSTS
This is my first Acrobat purchase - and my last. Researching their catalog I see they put out many hundreds of nostalgia packages - expressly aimed at English “oldies” like myself who cannot stand today’s tuneless pop music. And it seems Acrobat are not alone. Many other English companies on the same bandwagon - issuing 8 albums at a time - thanks to not having to pay royalties to the original recording companies and artists.Whereas ASV always produced well compiled CD’s with admirable sound (despite being taken from 78’s) what we have in this 5-CD package is a rush job with ear cringing DISTORTED sound on many of the less familiar songs - as Acrobat obviously don’t have the right equipment to convert bright 78 vinyl recordings into bright digital CD’s.Making this even more painfully obvious is the insertion of 26 tracks - where the sisters accompany Bing Crosby (for his hits – not theirs) and the sound is perfect. Presumably due to being borrowed from the complete 2-CD of their recordings from Decca in 1996.So what one gets here are 5 CD’s which one is never likely to want to play a second time. Many of their US hits being sentimental stuff which served a particular purpose during WW2. “Patience and Fortitude” a gruesome example of their how their close harmony laments can be wrecked by distortion - if badly transferred. It also appears some of their best upbeat recordings were never Hits. Missing are fun pieces like “Oh Mama - the butcher boy” and “Gimme some Skin”. Does any true fan want these to be excluded in favor of “Jealous” and “The Shrine of St. Cecilia”?Admittedly it’s hard to find a single CD that contains all their characteristic upbeat songs but “The Immortal Hits of the Andrew Sisters”, a cheap 1990 Italian import comes pretty close with 27 (non ballad) tracks and no distorted harmonies. The lesson I take away from this purchase is to avoid all the big 4-CD releases of their lesser known recordings. Disappointment is bound to follow. Especially to those like myself who bought all their 78 recordings with Danny Kaye and was blown away by the fun-loving exuberance of this perfect partnership - during very gloomy days in England at the end of WW2.

I LOVE Patty, Maxine, and Laverne
I love The Andrews Sisters. I have a lot of their music on various mediums-LP, cassette, CD, digital. When this arrived, the front plastic was cracked. The discs looked okay. Unfortunately, the first disc has something wrong with it. It plays just a few moments of each song and then the CD player ejects it saying there's a problem. I've not tried a different CD player yet, but if I can't solve the problem I'll have to return it. UPDATE: I tried the problem CD in a different player and it works fine so I'm changing my rating.

Decent, but still not quite there
The other, more scholarly review once again refuses to point out that among the 125 recordings found on this set, there are remakes of certain songs. Whether from later Decca remakes, or from the Capitol years, these remakes stand out on the discs like sore thumbs - do they really think they are fooling the public with songs from the 30s with fidelity this clean? So since the other won't tell you about it, I will, and being that the other material is remastered very nicely (never have 30s recordings sounded so good), I still cannot give this the highest rating. It's better than the Real Gone collection of some of the same material, to be sure, but the inclusion of remakes over originals only puts this at a three-star for me.When will we get a good, chronological collection of the original recordings? (Bear Family - are you listening?)

For your sake, don't believe any of the 5 star reviews.
This five CD set from Acrobat was disappointing. To see some reviewers you would think this is the best thing since sliced bread.5 stars?...please.Acrobat blows hot and cold in their releases and this is one could have been so much better.Where Acrobat blows it is in their processing...period.If the band isn't distorted ,it is the vocals of the Andrew Sisters.I have the two CD set from MCA,and I did some comparison listening.First I compared The Ferry Serenade;Acrobat processing couldn't keep the distortion down on the vocals. For one of their biggest hitsThe Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,the opening trumpet was thisclose to being completely distorted. Not what one wants to hear at all. This a poor third or fourth cousin from the originals. As I am writing this I have been listening to the one of the CDs in the background, and each and every tune I have heard has distortion on each.Awful.How any reviewer with half decent hearing could give this a thumbs up is beyond me.Acrobat isn't the only company reprocessing old records for new releases, but they are not one of the better companies doing it.I mean,c'mon, one gets what one pays for, don't they? You expect top notch sound for this price for 5 CDs? You are kidding yourself.Let us also mention the booklet included;it does give the chart positions of each song, but spoil it by giving you just the year the song came out,not the exact date.Did I really expect better? In conclusion, avoid this clunker. This is like listening to these 78s on your own turntable. You may get a lot of the Sisters recordings over a good number of years, but the very poor processing spoils this release entirely.I got this release on the review of a certain doctor reviewer here who seemed to know his onions. This puts his rep right into the toilet,if he really believes what he wrote.Save your money folks.
