I am deeply fascinated by the fact of how authors bring out their inner world and express it through their fiction and help us relate to see in different ways how it can apply to the way we feel at times.What also remains a mystery is the simple fact that so many 19th century authors only made it to 40 years old. Jack London was a hobo, sailor, oyster pirate, gold prospector, fish and game warden, war correspondent, and writer. He was brought up in poverty, then gained fame and wealth, spent it all and ended up with nothing. I remember when I visited Valley of the Moon where he built Wolf House, named after a slogan, his fans gave him as The Wolf. But it burnt down and was destroyed in a fire two weeks before he moved in. He also had a large ranch in Sonoma County north of San Francisco, which he named Beauty Ranch.His best known works, The Call of the Wild, White Fang and The Sea Wolf, mostly cover Social Darwinism, adventure, survival and what we are up against when nature against nature clash. His Ultimate philosophy was to live life to the fullest.“ I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” - Jack London 1876-1916

I bought this book because my little brother wanted to read call of the wild, but we ended up hooked and read it cover to cover. All gold valley and to build a fire are excellent additions to this collection. It looks great on the bookshelf too.

Uma beleza, assim como todas as outras edições da Canterbury Classics.Os livros são alguns dos mais conhecidos do Jack London. O meu preferido até agora foi o The Sea Wolf (O Lobo do Mar). Capitão Wolf Larsen tá mais pra demônio que lobo.
