Physical Chemistry as a f(Time)
Before the millenium, Levine had written essentially the same book (circa1996?) with a black cover for an undergraduate p.chem course. Then came the 2001 pink edition and now the 2008 rainbow edition. I have all 3 copies and have an earned Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry (prior to the '96 edition). The 4th edition ('96) was a very good text which I could make my way through with only moderate difficulty. The 5th edition was not as well written and more confusing leading me to quit after about 8 chapters. The 6th or present edition got me to quit after 3 chapters. It is possible that I am getting less capable in physical chemistry with age but I think that Dr. Levine is getting more complicated with each edition. Many of the mathematical proofs offered exclusively in the 6th edition just shouldn't be there. They are overcomplicating the discussion and it would be better for students to just accept the conclusions without going through the mathematical rigor (leading to mental rigor mortis). In quantum mechanics, I have learned to accept the conclusions and not even desire to see the rigorous derivations of the final equations. I learned not to ask after I saw a few of these in texts. Somethings are best left unsaid and unread, if you know what I mean. My opinion is that Dr. Levine should have quit at the 4th edition because after that he is understanding the mathematical sources of physical chemistry better but is not able to explain them at our level down here anymore. He assumes that we are a lot more p.chem/math saavy then we are and we are getting lost in his derivations and explanations. I gave the 4th edition 5 stars; I give this one 2-3 stars. I wonder, is this the same Ira Levine that left Rutgers grad school in the late 60's? There was an Ira Levine that I knew at Rutgers in grad school but he went someplace else.

good
It was definitely good to have. I wish it would have been more detailed in explanating where results came from.

Good book
P-chem is an absolutely terrible chemistry course, and this book is helping me stay afloat. Excellent study aid, use it with all of my homework.

The copy we received had the title spelled incorrectly in several places.

Wonderful.
Exactly what I needed to pass this class. Thanks to this, I have a great guide of how to do the problems in the book. Highly recommended if taking Physical Chemistry one or two.

USEFUL and excellent
Used as textbook for Chemistry students, and for chemistry researchers, too. An up-to-date manual to complement the "methodological" and "theoretical" Physical Chemistry studying. Good service by Amazon!
