what if the machete is a little shorter like 16'' will it fit?

This sheath is just plain awesome. I have 6 different types of machete's and use the sheath for which ever one I need.

If i remove plastic sheath from the rothco 18 inch molle compatible machete sheath will the rothco gi type plastic machete sheath fit in?

Hey Scott, apparently it would fit, since the rothco GI type plastic machete sheath measures 3 in W x .5 in H x 18.5 in L. Actually, I tried to insert a pack of cigarettes inside and it fits perfect, in fact it has .5 in width left. You can reach a pack of cigarettes and compare it to the GI sheath. Good luck.

is the plastic insert removable ?

Yes it is removable, just be careful, when I got mine they fold it for shipping so the plastic got broken
