Best Actress Performance by Bette Midler
Oh, how the Divine Miss M.'s 5 decades long performance artist career proves her adoration of the 1940's "bid band" war-time, fast tempo, boogie woogie songs. This film starts out with them immediately. The plot line strung throughout the movie is tremendously heart-moving as it captures the very spirit of Americana during war times.Who knew James Caan could sing? Especially since his duet partner is Bette Midler! This story put to film has it all, from comedy to tragedy, bawdiness to romance. This reviewer remains stunned that Bette Midler didn't win an Oscar for Best Actress, but did win, from the Hollywood foreign press, another Best Actress Golden Globe, with this film setting the record with a staggering 12 nominations. But, when I consider how classic "Silence of the Lambs" still is and likely always will be, it isn't surprising that Jodie Foster took home her 2nd Oscar, instead. (That explains it all to me as the ONLY reason why Midler did not). This film is that recording setting in accolades terrific in every respect. When I celebrate July 4th, this film is my 'fireworks' of being engulfed in truly American culture at its best~

One of Bette's best movies ever.
I saw this movie within two days right when I received it. This movie is excellent with stellar acting by Bette Midler and James Caan. When I got done watching it, it became an instant favorite of mine. I had learned that this movie didn't get much recognition when it first came out, and that Bette was nominated for an Oscar (this was her second nomination). I feel that she should have won the award for her performance; why she didn't is anyone's guess. Again, this was the second time she was nominated for the award, and it was the second time she lost (her first nomination, in 1980, was for her role in The Rose). The story deals with Eddie Sparks (Caan) and Dixie Leonard (Midler), who do singing and comedy routines for the troops covering WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc. They don't like each other a whole lot, but they manage to put aside their differences for the sake of their acts. I read where the critics complained about the aging makeup that Midler and Caan wore when playing their characters in old age. I thought the makeup was not bad. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of Bette Midler's acting, and the soundtrack album is also highly recommended. With comedy, drama and music combined together, this movie makes for great entertainment anytime.

For The Boys
I am a fan of music and like the fun music of this war-time story, where music was always a way for soldiers to boost their spirits. This movie has a storyline that grips your interest all the way to the end. Bette Midler is such a fabulous performer--plays the USO singer well, with her acting and vocal talent. It was amazing how Bette aged, to a believable "old" Bette. I haven't seen James Caan in the movies very much, so, enjoyed them together. They play a believable pair, naturally playing off each other--from young to mature. Enjoyable movie/story, with a nice hint of era-history--and the full range of emotion. I think you can enjoy this story over and over, and the next generation can get a taste of a life they do not know, old war-time days. A nice time capsule story here.

This is one of the alltime great movie depictions that actually "depicts" what the USO/Armed Services Entertainment Services where all about. Behind the scenes as well as in front of the scenes, this film does justice to the "Bob Hope" overseas shows, dedicated to entertaining the troops. From WWII through Korea, and into Vietnam. Yes, it is Hollywood but, it is a great movie for those who lived during the era to relive a time forgotten, as well as for those who would like to visit "what the era was like".....From the Big Band Era to The Sixties, this is a great movie from Bette Midler and James Caan, whose reputations precede themselves as terrific actors. Shipping was spot on (early) and quality was as expected.

One of Bette's best
Bette worked on this movie for a long time, it was her baby. A great baby it was but too bad the box-office didn't reflect that. Bette was so amzing in this movie! James Caan is not known for his singing (obviously) but he is great as the under-talented but huge star. The love/hate chemistry between Bette and him works so well. The soundtrack of 40's to 60's songs is perfect and B & J work them like champs. The "Dixie's Dream" duet where she expresses her hatred for him is hysterical. When the movie goes to Vietnam it gets pretty heavy and I cry every single time I watch it. For an emotional cripple like myself that is huge. All I really want for a movie is to be entertained; not enlightened, informed, or educated.I got a little of each from this film. Even if you only watch the musical numbers this film is great. The context provided by the rest of the story makes the rest even better.

For The Boys
Univers musical rythmé des années 50 qui ne vieilli pas.. Tout y est le monde qui change, l'amitié, l'amour, la haine, la famille, la vie, la mort, la jeunesse la vieillesse. Avec une dose d'humour. J'ai Adoré.
