Q: Does the microwave wattage make a difference in heat time? Does it say that in the instructions?

I think so. I have a 1200 watt and I think the minute and 30 seconds is a bit too long. 1 minute for a 1200 watt microwave seems to be a more manageable heat.

Q: Why do these back heating pads keep busting?

Try to avoid folding it - lay it flat in the microwave. Folding can concentrate the heat and cause it to burn thru.

Q: Can the thermal on be washed and still be effective

The product is made to be hand washable and reusable and should not lose any effectiveness as a result of washing. Our Care instructions for the product are as follows: Wait at least 2 hours after use to wash. Hand wash or surface clean with mild soap and cold water. Allow to air dry for 24 hours before reuse. DO NOT USE WARM OR HOT WATER. DO NOT MACHINE WASH.

Q: I have a 40 inch waist. Will this fit me? Is there enough slack to tie it?

Yes, it will tie. I measured mine and the total length, tie and heating pad combined, is 57 inches. I just sit with it in back of me in a chair, so I never thought of tying it, but it's actually pretty comfortable.
