The Scotty rod holder is designed and built better than the competition.
The rod holders that came with my recently purchased used boat were shaped similar to the Scotty rod holders. When I went fishing on the Columbia River, a salmon struck my line and pulled the rod holder flat. I lost a large fish because the line went slack. I almost lost the rod and reel. The old rod holders had mating locking surfaces consisting of shallow, tapered steps. No matter how tight you turned the wing nut, these surfaces would slip under load.The mating locking surfaces on my new Scotty rod holders consists of deep, heavy square notches. The Scotty rod holders cannot slip under load.

This is a lot bulkier than I thought it would be but works as it should. I ordered the backing plate for this also.

This thing is huge!! Way too big for a kayak!!
This thing is huge!!! Way bigger than the non locking version and way too big to put on my kayak!! It's a nice holder, but they need to tell you in the description that it is much larger than the original version. Had to return it.
