cheap, thin wire, and have to file tabs...but works if you tinker with it.
cheap, thin wire, and have to file tabs...but works if you tinker with it. Yes the big alkaline D batteries are fat and dond't like to fit in this thing so I used a wire cutting nipper to cut out the tabs and supports around the end of the batteries. Now it works.

Perfect for my project
Needed these to convert a World War 2-era US Navy battle lantern from two big old 1.5 volt dry cells to D cells and it worked out perfectly!

I build and repair qrp transcievers, short wave radios and other electrical items.
Having a few D sized battery holder like this, allows me to make up some long life battery packs to run small things with, or to simply replace the broken or corroded battery holders in older radios that I repair, and all kinds of things. two of them will likely be used in a 12 volt battery pack I can use to power up my wireless router with in some future power failure, In the mean time, its a portable battery pack for my radios. I've used similar packs to make portable camping (and power failure) LED lamps with. One toy I made looks like a Christmas candle with a larger base and one of these inside, It sets on a table near my front door still working for the past five years. It flashes only if some on with a cell phone walks by the table it sets on. And I've used them in making lightening detectors, so they too will run for a long time. Did i mention i also make odd toys like this?

Not all d batteries work in these
I found that little tabs in the plastic mold prevent the positive terminal from making contact with the battery. Not every brand will work with these holders. I had to file the tabs down to make the batteries contact the positive terminals.

Low Quality
One of the four was defective. Oh well. At least they were cheap.
