Review: Surprisingly solid - I assumed for $100 this would be thin cheap sheet metal with a cheap plastic facing, but that would do for what I wanted it for. The plastic facing IS kinda cheap.... so I was half right. But MAN this thing is SOLID! It weights about triple what I thought it would. A cut out paper template would have been nice too, but not a deal breaker.... Quite pleased in general, at a steal at the price really.

IMO - Having a good stud finder made all the difference. I purchased a JAXWQ stud finder on desertcart and it worked great. Also, I added a 2X4 on the bottom for the safe to sit on while installing the screws into the studs. Use a level to make sure everything is straight. The safe is no frills but solid. Installing the batteries and passcodes was easy. So overall, there were no surprises on install which I appreciate. You really can't go wrong with this safe for the price point.

**Q: Is it fireproof?**
A: The safe itself is "fireproof" but it is not insulated so it will not protect paper or media items from heat damage. The safe is burglary resistant. Putting items in an asbestos bag will not protect them from heat so do not let anyone sell you on that idea. There are no truly fireproof safes on fire resistant safes and then they are only rated for certain types of fires. A safe rated 1 hour 350 degrees should protect documents for up to one hour in a normal building fire; if the fire burns too long or too hot the safe will not protect documents. **Q: How far does the keypad protrude from the front? I would like to conceal this with a picture; do you think this would be possible?**
A: I concealed mine with a white board that I hung vertically.  I cut wood strips about 3/4 inch thick and glued them to the top and bottom of the white board so it just clears the keypad.  For a picture or a tapestry, it might be simpler to fasten a wood strip to the wall and hang the picture from the strip.

**Q: How is battery life with brand name alkaline batteries?**
A: I bought this safe in 2014 and just replaced the original factory batteries today (early 2021).  On overage I only use the keypad once a month, but I’m beyond satisfied with the battery life.  I’m not sure the batteries would last any longer if they were simply stored in a drawer.

**Q: How often do the batteries need to be replaced (if rarely opened)?**
A: Personally, I change the batteries every year in my safes and smoke detectors whether they need it or not. Batteries are cheap so why not. I reuse the batteries in remotes and flashlights.

This is a great wall safe. I bought it to store some of my handguns, and they both fit nicely. I receive the exact model pictured here, not sure how one review received the wrong one. Installation: When you open the box you will need to rip the plastic bag containing the manual key and instructions so you can use this key to open the door. There is a small Philips screw holding the cover on, you will need to remove this screw and cover to access the key hole (warning: when you remove the cover it also holds the number pad in place so it can fall off). Once the safe is opened you can put the batteries in and use the red button to program your code. I then measured dimensions of the protruding back end of the safe, and found the location of one stud where I wanted to mount it; I then cut the opening to match the dimensions from the backing of the safe. It fit in perfectly, and I was able to secure it to studs on both sides of the safe, I made my cut so that one side of the safe was flush against the stud, and I would estimate I had about a 1"-1.5" gap on the other side. The lag bolts that came with it are a bit small for the application, but with 3 on each side I felt it was secure enough. Uses: The unit stores both of my handguns easily a .40 and a .38, I have them standing up on the bottom shelf, as well as multiple spare magazines and boxes of bullets. The middle shelf can only be utilized to about ½ the depth since the battery and tumbler mechanism protrude out into that area. Conclusion: It is a great wall safe for security of smaller items, with a programmable coded entry. I am not sure if this is the best "Hidden" safe since the key pad and turn knob protrude out the front almost an inch, so if your picture has a flat back it will not sit flush against the wall, and be pushed out by the safe. We have ours mounted in a walk-in closet behind the hanging clothes so I am not concerned about that issue. Even with that minor issue for the price, and easy installation it is definitely worth it, and still a 5-star item.
